Did the engine flush and while I was idling it with the ATF in it the ticking noise went away?????
Then after adding oil again, it started after a 30 minutes or so. Am i destined to a valve job even though I havent had any power loss or misfires or am I overlooking something? Is there anything else I can try to stave off the dreaded valve job? |

On post number 9 you said you had no smoke when you seafoamed. Was that through the intake you did it? Half a can in with engine running..shut car off....let it sit for 30 min, then run the car at 2200-2500 rpms until no smoke.
Seems that even if you had just a little buildup, you should have had some smoke? |

Hold on everybody, the tick is probably just one of the rocker arms. The steel cup that the pushrod rides in has a tendency to come loose, the stamping around the cup lets go a little letting the cup move...in turn tick, tick, tick.
I have also seen the pad where the valve stem rides on the rocker arm come out and guess waht tick, tick, tick. I would check the rocker arms first. A sticking valve will give you running issues and a cel light. |

That post was from the first time I seafoamed it and followed the directions on the can to only leave it sit for 15 minutes.
On further research I found out that 30 minutes was more like it so the second time it did smoke! So, to clarify it did smoke. What is the best way to check the rocker shafts???... pull the valve cover off and check them by hand. I just figured if it was rocker shafts I would be able to hear the noise get louder if I pulled the oil filler cap off and it doesn't seem to do so. It is coming from the passenger side head when I put the ole stethescope on it. Thanks for the reply. I will get this little gremlin figured out yet. |

sorry to bring back a dead thread, but i am looking at buying a 2000 LR Discovery II with 91,000 miles on the clock. It had the belt replaced. But i hear that same ticking noise. Its loud as PISS. It sounds like its coming from the front of the car but not on the top, more on the bottom. But sometimes it will sound as if its coming from the bottom rear of the engine.
![]() I just figured it was "ok" but like many others have said it sounds like metal on metal and it sounds like its not "inside the engine" but in the open. anyone been able to make it STOP |

I am finding that quite often the ticking can be attributed to two things. I don't mean to sound snobbish, but are you sure that you know how full the oil is supposed to be? low oil will make your engine tick a bit louder. i have seen people get confused about where to read the dipstick. just a thought.
the other is the exhaust manifold connection to the down-pipe can make a very "tinny" tapping sound if it leaks. Usually if it is a minor leak, the tapping sound will get a lot quieter once the engine warms up. just a thought
