Default Disco II trouble starting?

Hello all, I have run a search on Starters and such, but I haven't found any prominent info related to my problem. I have a 03 Disco II, 75K and just recently giving me starting problems. I turn the key and everything lights up with good Volts, I turn it all the way over and my Starter gives a half-turn, tries to start doesn't do anything(meanwhile i haven't disengaged the key from starting position) and 5-10 seconds later it turns all the way over and gives it enough juice to start the Rover. This is very wierd, does this sound like my starter is going out or relays or what??

Please help, before I spend a ton of money on a Rover mechanic tracing this problem by replacing everything from my Alternator to relays to Starter. Thanks.

You could just have bad contact between the battery terminals and the cables (the heat form holding the key in the start position during the delay is what may help it start).

Check the connections and just take the vehicle to a local AutoZone and they can at least give you a starting point. They can test the battery and altenator without removing any components...

Ditto on jmrivera's suggestion, check your battery terminals since I had a similar situation and my terminal was really corroded and wasn't getting a good connection.

The other thing, if it's the original battery, that may be going as well.

Good luck in figuring it out.

Run your truck down and have one of the local auto parts store do a starter test, after you have cleaned and tightened you cables.

Could it be the Solenoid? can the auto parts store determine that?

If it is, they will pick it up as a starter issue... Then you can pull the starter and take it to them for further testing...

You sound a lot like me - worrying about all the posibilites without doing any initial troubleshooting... Relax and take it slow, I know how hard it is though.... Everyone here is here to help....

Battery terminals clean and tight.

everyone I have talked to(Napa, ORiellys, Advance) needs me to take the starter out just to test it. That doesn't help much.

You say the battery connections are clean and tight, did you climb underneath the truck and check the connections at the starter.

I suspect you'll find that makes no difference, but check it anyways I've been wrong before. You then need to pull the starter. It's not as bad as it looks takes about 30 min tops. Take it to the parts store they'll test it say it's bad like mine that was when it was doing the same thing. They will then tell you unless it's a good sized napa that it's special order and they don't have it. Then you'll order it replace it and go about your life happily motoring along.

Not that I've been there or anything lol

Partsamerica dot com has one for less than $100 and it comes with a lifetime warranty...
Part Number: 12445

Autozone also has them:
Part Number: 17683

Good luck... I have actually rebuilt a BOSCH starter myself using the same interior components, but this was for a '99 VW Jetta... It wasn't hard at all and the starter lasted another 5 years until the car got into an accident and was totaled by the insurance...

Doesn't matter if they have it in stock or not really unless your hoping to take one home with you.

It was more a comment on more often than not smaller autozones pep boys napa etc don't have parts in stock for our rovers. At least not in most places I've called home except for indiana they had to starters on the shelf lol.

Ok, back from Napa and got more bad news. First off, the Napa I went to, was 4 miles away, took me 8 minutes to get there, and my engine got hot getting there! Luckily I was able to pull in before the light came on. I had the head gasket, (radiator and water pump, replaced by the dealership, terrible because the head gasket was blown I might add) replaced by a very good shop last November. Anyways, I had them break out the code reader and this is what they found:

P1300
P0306
P0319
P0304
P0308
P1319

It seems I have some serious problems here. I plan on taking it back to the shop who did my Head Gasket soon. What do you guys think?
