I’ve been a voyeur to the site thus far, but I finally have a problem that warrants a post. My ’01 Disco has had two instances today of not starting. The engine is turning over, but its as if its not getting spark or fuel.
At lunch today it didn’t start after several attempts, so I plugged in my OBDII scanner and found no codes. I tried to start it again and it finally started. After work, it started without issue until I went to the grocery store and then failed to start again. I tried for 10-15 minutes to start it again to avail. I tried locking and unlocking the rig several times between starts. Accepting defeat, I called a buddy to take me home. Well we had a couple beers and went back to try again for giggles. Surprise, surprise it started. Reading through the posts, two thinks come to mind; crank sensor or inertia switch. Is there a way to determine this without just throwing parts at it? 95K on the rig. Thanks, Matt |

when you have the engine running can you get codes? does the motor just turn over?
next time the motor doesn't start. pull a plug wire, place an old spark plug on it. and see if you get a spark. my money is on the crank sensor. inspect the sensor and see if there's any moisture around it. or if it looks like something a bear spit out of his...... nose. ![]() Rudy |

I have seen probably 12 cases of failing crank sensors over the last month on a few different sites.
When it goes, your engine will crank but you'll have no spark or fuel pressure. If this is what is going on for you, it is a fairly cheap part, about $80 and fairly easy to replace. Mike |

Hi,
I've recently experienced a problem in Crank sensor on my 01 DII. The truck failled several times, the symptoms were some kind of misfire, and loss of power. The test as showned some error codes in the trhotle potentiometer, but the problem was in the crank sensor wich was not not in good shape! He did some adjustments and it is back on (and OFF) the road! You should check yours.

I replaced the crank sensor on Saturday, and so far so good. Until I have a problem-free week or so, I won't declare victory. I did have a misfire the first time I ran her 5 minutes following the sensor swap, but I'm pretty sure it was unrelated and I just need to replace plugs and wires.
Thank for the help. |
