Land Rover is the only stealership I've ever purchased from that allows a broke ass vehicle to be sold to a customer.
Took me about a month of chasing around the dealership. I finally called the President, CEO or whatever of Land Rover Canada and in 5 minutes I had the appointment guy call ME. In a week I had every gasket and seal on my rover fixed free of charge. Im sure they did the backyard mechanic special, but 30,000kms and no problems. My advice is instead of a lawsuit, try going to the top. Call the bigshot. Say your from a bigshot outfit, like a vice president of some company. Ask him how much an hour his mechanic costs, then ask how much an hour his lawyer costs. Let him do the math. But on the driveshaft point. My driveshaft went at about 120,000kms. Whatever that is in miles. Our service truck at work is a Ford 1 Ton Diesel. It uses the exact same front driveshaft setup as the Disco. Its Identical, albiet a ford setup so probably a different series. That truck has almost 300,000kms on it and its never had a problem. They arn't serviceable (greasable). I've noticed land rovers stuff is either really strong or really shitty.

Just like any other major problems (at least in the USA), several folks are going to have to be killed before any attention is drawn to it, thereby causing an investigation (proving the fatality was caused by a faulty shaft), then a recall.
Remember Firestone? No one (the general public) knew about a problem until people died and pieces were put together and a common problem of a tire. Remember the O-rings on the booster rockets? Clearly known defects and people had to die first, then fix the problem. So, getting data from all crashes related to Rovers and then attributing them to a shaft is an uphill battle,...but you can't win if you don't try. |

I agree that you should take some kind of action in this case, whether its a lawsuit of not. As an DII owner who has to replace my front drive shaft tomorrow morning at 88k miles, i'm just glad that it hasn't broke off like yours and destroyed my trans case, and trans, and probablly something else. As an owner for about 6 months, i didnt know about this common issue until a couple days ago.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the input, both positive and negative. If your prop has failed, you don't mind, and you have time can you please PM me with the following details: 1. What engine and gearbox were on your Disco? 2. What mileage was on the car? 3. What country do you live in? I think I have noticed that it's more prone to failure in the hotter countries. Exactly which U joints are the ones that fail? I had LR of Tampa replace my front drive shaft under warranty due to vibrations i was noticing last year. The new drive shaft they put in has grease fittings on the drive shaft itself and on the u joint that is towards the front of the car, however their are no grease fittings on the ujoints that are on the rear end of the front drive shaft where it meets with the transfer case. So is it the front or rear ujoints on the front propshaft that are known to fail. If its the rear ones then why the hell did the dealership put grease fitted ujoints on all the others except those 2. Ive always been a little confused on this, can somone just tell me exactly which ujoints are the ones that fail.

Guess i'll have to remain confused on this subject. Can someone please just tell me if its the front or rear Ujoints i need to be concerned about on the front driveshaft, or all of the above. Thanks.

They put a stock shaft back in your rover. Get that shit out and repalce ALL u-joints with greasers....

well thats what i was wondering about. The replacement they gave me had greasable ujoints on the front end of the drive shaft but the rears where it connects up with the transfer case are non greasables, are those the ones i need to be worrying about or is it just simply all of them.
