Default Does a 2003 Disco only use a transponder key?

Just purchased an uncut genuine Land Rover key from eBay that was listed to work with Disco II's up to 2004.

The blade matches my keyless entry blade exactly.
I've been to 3 locksmiths that just pull out a book and look under Land Rover and say, "go to the dealer", not saying wether they can "cut" the key or not.

This new key does not look to be able to be opened or have a transponder in it.

Do 2003 Discovery's only use keys with transponders?
Thx!

From the factory, yes, that is not to say you can't have a regular key blank from Rover cut.
Two things, did you get the bar code for the remote, if not it is worthless and when cutting a key, don't copy the old partially warn key, have one cut using the key code from Rover.

This is the key I purchased:

I have had my current key w/ remote open to change the battery and did not notice a transponder chip anywhere-? Is it not located there?

I don't have a barcode / remote code.

Will the dealer still be able to make me a new key?

I am unable to determine if the new key I purchased has a transponder chip in it or not.

That is a valet key, I had three cut at my local ace hardware and work fine as a matter of fact I have never had the remote key in almost 5 years of ownership and 45,000 miles. you will be fine if the guy that cuts it is not a total hack.

No electronics in valet key or in key shank/remote. They are made of stainless steel. Some locksmith may hesitate to cut stainless steel though.

Default Update*

Just had the key cut today.
I had to take it to 4 different places before someone would finally agree to cut it.

1. Home Depot: "wah, wah, transponder, wah"
2. Lowes: "wah, wah take it to a dealer, wah, transponder, wah"
3. Local Locksmith #1: "what kind of car is this for? A Land Rover? let me look in the book... take it to the dealer, transponder, wah, wah"

4. Ace Hardware: "let me see that..... cut...cut...cut...cut... here ya go"
Me:"what do I owe you?"
Ace hardware:"nothing, its your blank, your risk, good luck"

Tested in door lock: works fine!
Tested in ignition: started right up!

New key for $10 off eBay!

Good job. Which Ace did you take it to? I've had 2 blanks cut...all work, but not very well in the ignition...
