If the Scion and Element are toasters...then we drive Microwaves.

By spending all that loot on how to save a mile or two, you just defeated the purpose of saving, no?

15mpg is what we will die by.

So what about Brands of fuel???

I used to have a Ford Explorer (please excuse me for that) and I would use fuel from Costco (my stores got it from Shell)... Every other time I would fill the tank, the gauge would not come to the "F", but stay at the "E"... I was told by the dealer that the fuel sending unit had silver contacts and it was being affected by the higher sulfur content in the discount fuel, thus the error on the gauge. The only reason I took it to the dealer was because I got a "Check Engine" light and it was under Warranty...

Since my Costco stores get the fuel from Shell, I am assuming that the premium there is the same as the shell stations... That's what my Disco. has been feeding on...

So, anyone have any ideas as to whether this was a load of crap by the ford dealer?

The fuels any of the discount store get, do come from major refineries but usually have none of the additive that set them apart from the cheaper gas.
I buy there to save money but I also run a fair amount of gas additive to help keep the engine clean and get the best gas mileage.

Default Got ya'll beat..

That link is very interesting but.... I just installed a my first flux capacitor last weekend... I run 93 octane if I have to, providing there is no Plutonium or Land Fills around. Nothing like your Rover Running on old beer and 1/2 eaten TV dinners... One time I got stranded while I was muddin, I had to whip out the extension pole and attach it to the roof. Luckily there was a storm brewing a few miles off. Beware! It's 1.21 Jigawatz not 1.22... I learned the hard way...

Does everyone use some sort of ethanol blend where you live??? Here in New Mexico, all fuel was "enhanced" with 15% ethanol from November to February and I notice a 10 to 15% drop in mpg in all my vehicles... Now, most stations around here are at least 10% ethanol... Anyone else?

Pretty soon finding 100% gasoline is going to be like it was in the 1990's when people would drive around looking for "regular" gas instead of unleaded...

Default Update on MPG

No one seems to be really interested in MPG but I am still working on it. Traveled from Atlanta to Auburn today. Before I left I put absolutely all the gas I could get in the tank. Drove 68-70 MPH all the way (about 1.75 hrs) on cruise. When I got to Auburn I filled it up completely again.

Answer - 19.5 mpg. Was pretty surprised. Get about 11.5-12.5 in and around town. Usually I drive about 75-80 MPH and get something like 16.5 mpg. So there are two points for my gas consumption graph.

Does 19.5 sound pretty typical for 68-70 MPH? Has anyone else tried this?

Not to nitpick, BUT...who buys a rig that is akin to driving a cinderblock towing a parachute and asks about a fuel consumption graph? Honestly?

My response would be someone who uses the truck for his business and needs to make a profit. The condescending remarks from some of the forum members are unnecessary and certainly do not do the forum proud.

We are just having some fun, but "profit" and "Land Rover" rarely collide in the same sentence unless you are selling one retail.

TYL604 - I don't think it's that nobodys interested - it's just that beyond plugs, wires, premium, gas treatment and a light right foot - there's not a lot you can do. It's funny my buddy was beating on me the other day for the gas guzzler (DII) but his Nazi staff car BMW X5 is a 3.0 and only get a couple MPG better. cheers !

Sorry guys. Guess I was a little too thin skinned. I have had a lot of help from the forum and it ranks high on my list.

No one tries to offend anyone, it is funny that this TOPIC comes up so often and in reality when we buy our Rovers we know in advance that there is no Magic on fuel, specially when we start building them up for off road, adding roof racks, lift, tires, etc etc etc and we start loosing couple of miles. Sorry if my Joke came up as condescending.
