Default Double-Carbon U-Joints

Can someone tell me how to rebuild these as I am worried about them after reading about the issues in so many posts. Is there a part that can be bought from DAP or Atlantic British? How difficult is the repair/replacement? Any information would be great.

If you've ever replaced u-joints its the same thing but a little more difficult because you're removing and replacing two u-joints at the same time, plus a center ball joint; lining all three up for assembly without loosing a needle bearing can be an adventure. If you've never replaced u-joints, it might be a bit more of an adventure than you'd want to experience. The best advice I can give you if your going to do it yourself; use the proper technical data and take it step-by-step, mark your parts for reassembly (index), and use a press or vise (not a hammer). If your D/C is fairly new, the only parts you might need are two new u-joints; the center ball may be good enough to reuse.
Whether you do it or a shop does, make sure you get new u-joints with greese fittings (zerks); this will increase the life of your rebuild. Good luck

Bill at Great Basin Rover has a kit with all the parts you need which includes a better quality u-joint also.
Some people have gone to their local auto parts store and found a u-joint that will work also, I just don't know know if they are any better quality.

You can buy the Spicer u-joint to fit your application from a local driveline shop. It will range anywhere from $12 - $30 per u-joint depending on the mark up by the shop.

The spicer u -joint is number 5-4x. Try and find that for under $30. I just paid $32 from Standard Parts here in town,Spicer is expensive but worth it. Don't bother with the Napa u-joint. They suck.

The Spicer part number is 5-4x. The Precision number is 344. Avoid the Napa ones if you can. They suck! You should also get the centering kit. Precision 617. Napa has this part also but I don't know who makes it.
I tried to PM you on meany web but it took a poo also!
Have fun on your trip!

If you have never rebuilt a double cardon, you might rethink it and have a shop do it for you. They are hard to do and if it fails while you are driving, you could loose your trannt.

Thanks! Thank you! You are the BEST! I found them at AutoZone or one of those for $$53.97 with tax! I bought three of them. I did not buy the Precision 617, Do I need it?

Mike- A tranny/driveshaft shop is rebuilding the driveshaft for me. I have no idea how to use a press and would hate to see that thing let loose in MOAB!

You may not need it but it's best to replace the centering kit while you have it apart.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Does anyone know the part number for the centering kit sold at autozone? The knuckle draggers that work there can't find it for me in the computer system.

I found that but no love from the knuckle draggers with that part #. Can anyone verify that number?
