Default Driveshaft rebuild

Gents, I just called my local big trucks susp. and driveshaft place and they said they couldn't do the u-joint replacement and driveshaft service job, due to the fact that they do not have any listings for the Land Rover Discovery.

I asked him if it would help if I'd get back to them with the part number of the u-joints. They said most definitely.

So.......Anybody has the part# for the greasable spicer u-joints ?????

Thank you,

Steph

Oh Gosh! I had the same thing, untill I brought it in and he matched them up on sight. I dont know the numbers, but they are just afraid of something that isn't a Chev/Ford/Dodge truck.

front shaft
- 3 u joints (precision 344)
- 1 ball centering kit for the double cardon (precision 617)

rear shaft
- 1 u joint (precision 344)

That is exactly the combination used on my 99 D2, partrs are easy to find and if you don't want to do it yourself, nearly any tranny shop can rebuild a double cardon. If need be, take the front shaft off yourself and take it to the shop, save some money, in the mean time, engage your CDL and drive around on the rear until the shop is done with your front drive shaft.

I'll do that (take the shaft off and bring it in) It is the front one that needs to be serviced urgently, isn't it???

I won't drive it though, I'll use the Jeep. I've been kind of neglecting it since I got the disco 2 months ago.

P.S What is the difference in cost between doing it myself and having it done ???

I mean how much should I expect to pay in parts ???? and how much should I expect to pay in labour should I decide to have it done ???

Thanks,

Steph.

You will be looking at about $40 apiece for the u-joints and since it is out, do all 3 and be safe. Labor at a shop would be around $100 to $120 for the 3 joints.

Go to www.rockauto.com to save significantly on the u-joints. Search by part number.
Or you can go to Auto Zone and get PDQ1-0005 u-joints. These are Neapco u-joints with the grease zerk on the end cap and beefier to boot. They will only run you $15 a piece.
If you go to discoweb and do a search on the this oft repeated topic you will find the Neapco part number for the centering kit.

HEHE! I bought all the parts for about $90 roughly and I got a guy that runs a tranny shop that is going to do all the work(take the shaft off, and rebuild it) for $40!

Spicer part number is 5-4x. For what it's worth, some say that Spicer no longer makes them, other's say they are now made for Spicer but not by Spicer and others say that there is stock out there, just need to find it. Try asking for a 1993 Volvo 240. That's what I asked the guy at Advance Auto and he got me the PDQ/Neapco 1-0005 u-joints, a popular replacement for stock.

And it's virtually identicle to the Spicer unit. I have both in mine so I know this as a fact.
Try finding the Spicer, it ain't out there.
