Default Engine cutting out

Hi Guys

My Disco II 2001 Td5 GS recently started giving me the following problem:

The temperature gauge shows and increase in temperature, right up to maximum. The it drops straight down, and the red warning light comes on. It then feels that the vehicle is "governed" to a maximum speed of around 80km/h.

The funny thing is, when this happens, I switch my vehicle off, while moving at this speed, and then on again, let go of the clutch to turn the engine over, and this restarts the vehicle again, with the temperature gauge returning back to normal, and the vehicle also acting normally.

This problem usually occurs when driving longish distances (500km +) - cruising speed approx 130km/h. Odometer 123 400.

Please help!

Mario

Mario, as we don't have the TD5 here in North America, i'm going to take a stab in the dark [as i have lots of diesel experience]. I would suspect that the coolant sensor is going goofy. Once the sensor reading goes out of range it triggers the computer to limp mode and the vehicle has drivability issues until you restart it and clear the reading.

As i suspect the vehicle doesn't overheat [as you would have said] a coolant issue is doughtfull. I am also assuming the level is good etc.....

You could change it yourself as i would think it's not that expensive or hard to get at or find yourself a good shop that can scan it for codes and repair as needed....don't be suprised if there are no codes!!!!

Later, Dean

Thanks guys (and gals)

I'll explore both options and see it there is any change. Bad part is, that I'm not due to travel any long distances soon again, and this is when the problem occurs. Will keep you informed on the outcome though.

Are these the codes that everyone is referring to?

Thanks.
