Engine knocking...recent repair - Land Rovers Only

I recently had what I guess was major open heart surgery on my 2001 Disco II...warped head gaskets causing coolant leak. Had everything done by non-dealer, but Land Rover specialty shop, so I trust their work. However, in the three weeks since the work I've noticed two new issues. First, and less minor, the cruise control doesn't hold speed. It comes on and then slowly loses speed. Second, and more irritating, is a knocking noise in the engine, like the clicking sound the engine makes before it's warm, or when the oil needs changing. However, the sound persists long after the engine is warm. Strangely it seems to stop when I reach a speed around 60mph, but it could be that the engine noise at that speed drowns it out. I've also wondered if it could be an exhaust leak, making the rapid loud puff sound, but similar to a click.

I can take the Disco back to the shop, but before I start asking for a free follow up exam, I wanted to see if someone could tell me if these issues could have been unknowingly caused by the mechanic.

Cruise control is a vac problem- but the DII often has a little quirk where the vaccuum line to the vac reservoir leaks. Can often be fixed with a zip-tie. Check for something like that first. As for the noise- It could very well be an exhaust leak since they had it apart. Sometimes when I suspect and exhaust leak, I run top-end cleaner in the engine and watch for smoke out the exhaust gaskets. The top end cleaner is a good thing for the engine and it reveals leaking exhaust easily.

Thanks, Muddy. Can you tell me where to find the location to zip tie for the vac? Also, what is top end cleaner? Do you mean something like fuel injector cleaner? Do I look for smoke under the hood or under the vehicle on the pipe itself?

I would get the truck back to the shop, yesterday, to have the noise addressed especially if it is internal. To protect yourself you should always let a shop know if you have a problem after a repair if you expect them to take responsibility for fixing it.
As for the cruise control, they probably cracked a vaccum line when moving them as part of doing your head gaskets.

I would suggest having the SHOP to the top end cleaner- it's not the same as fuel injection cleaner (which shouldn't be used in DII's unless it's L.R. approved).

Thanks for the advice. I called the Rover shop today and they wish to fully stand behind their work, and asked me to bring my Disco in to have a look. His guess is that a manifold has ruptured or cracked which is causing the clicking or puffing sound. He agreed that it's likely that the one they put on could have failed. Also, he agreed, although to a smaller degree, that the cruise vac could have been damaged. Nonetheless, he wants to make sure it's fixed if they damaged it. He said that on older Disco I models it would have been more likely due to the complexity of the cruise assembly, and said that it's not as easy to damage the cruise components on Disco II's. I will follow up with results.
