Default Fluid Replacement

Greetings All,

New to the group, hello to everyone.

I had a couple of questions beyond what I could find in the searches.

1. I notice that 60k miles is the service for changing most all fluids ( brake, coolant, engine, trans, transfer cases etc ) Other than oil, is there any need to change prior to 60k?

2. Does anyone have a reco for fluids in: ( transmission, differentials, coolant etc ) I am using Mobile 1 5-30 for engine oil.

3. Any idea how to check the transmissiokn fluid level in the Discovery series 2?

Many thanks for the help.

Cheers

Brad

Brad,
The 60K is the second full fluid service for Rovers, I do mine more frequently though.
Rover engine run real rich and trash engine oil quickly as well as carbon build ups, so if you want to take good care of your truck, do the engine oil every 3500 or so, also use a 3001 K&N extra long oil filter. If you don't live in the snow country run 20/50 oil over the lighter weights.
As for the diffs and t/case, every 30K they should be serviced using a 80/90W syntheic oil, more frequently if you do alot of water crossings.
I like using a synthetic tranny fluid every 20,000 miles do to the wheeling I do, other wise it is every 30,000. By the way the only way to check the tranny fluid if to warm up the engine and while parked on a level surface remove the fill plug and see if fluid comes out, if it doesn't you are low.
Brake and power steering fluids should be done every 30,000, I use synthetic cause it holds up better.
As for the coolant, change it every 2 years or 20,000 miles to try and maintain your head gaskets, make sure you use the proper coolant. orange.
Good luck,
Mike

Brad,
You might also have your mechanic replace the double cardon u-joints on the front drive shaft if they haven't been done yet. These come from the factory with out grease fitting and can't be serviced, then they brake usually taking out the tranny case at the same time. Have it rebuilt using sericable u-joints so you don't have to worry about it down the road.
One other thing you should look at, if it hasn't been done yet, is to replace your plug wires. They are a cheap wire that causes many problems and just don't hold up well. If your's are old, consider ordering a set of Magnacor 8mm. wires.

Dean, I did alot of wheeling when new and at 36,000 they were powder. As I mentioned before, this is a well known problem with the DII's and very costly cause they will fail and hit the tranny case leaving it broken also.
Once you install the correct joints, service them and they will last a very long time.
