Freaking Break Job
Noticed some squeaking while driving. 03 Disco with 37K. Took to Midas and they said it needed new rotors and pads. Front pads almost gone. They showed me the rotor which had a little lip on the edges. (concave, they said it has worn into the rotors all around and they need to be replaced.) I saw on a post that it's normal because the pad doesn't not cover to the edge. As the boss walked away, the mechanic said I could get away with just doing the fronts and wait till the backs start making some noise and replace then. Is the Midas guy full of shit? Do I really need new rotors and pads or just pads? Midas: all for rotors and pads: $1000.00 Local Garage quote: $400.00 for front. $800.00 for front and back rotors and pads Stealership quote: Front: $668.00, Back $719.00 (why is the back more?) I saw that I could get all rotors and pads online for $400.00 Only problem is I have no way to change them myself, no tools/jack/idea what the hell I’m doing. Any advice would be great. Thanks for your help.

It's "brakes"
![]() The money you save will more than pay for the tools. But you do have a jack it's under your hood. Buy some jack stands, don't work on it with just the bottle jack supporting the truck. Get the RAVE manual download, others here will know where or do a search. Get some Castrol LMA brake fluid. A set of metric combination wrenchs. A good size C-clamp or one of those caliper compressing tools, use the old brake pad to compress both pistons at the same time. (just open the bleeder when compressing the caliper piston, you don't want old nasty brake fluid going back up into the ABS system.) Some BK Blaster penetrating spray for the bleeders. Some anti-squeal to spray on the back of the pads. Watch the sparings on the pads when sliding the caliper back on. I got all my rotors and ceramic pads for under $400. Get good pads!! Steve

Go to Atlantic British, talk with them and buy what they recommend. One of us can walk you thru the brake job, get a friend to help and you can do it on your driveway in under 2 hours.

I'd say now is a great time to learn to do this kind of stuff on your own. I'd invest in a good set of tools. You returns will be above and beyond what they cost in the short term. Also, did Midas say what kind of pads/rotors they were going to use? Rovers can be pretty picky about that, and usually brake jobs at shops that don't frequently work on LR's result in many trips back there.

Just did the same thing (full brake job) on my disco a few weeks ago. It took me about 3 hours and I bought 50 bucks of tools. Get an impact screw driver so you can get the screw out that holds the rotors in place without stripping anything. Got my parts from Atlantic British and saved a bunch. Good luck.

Midas is full of it. First off if its only a small lip and its the first change you can turn the rotor as long as its not past the minimum spec and put on a set of pads. Second you should be able to do at least 2-3 front brake jobs before needing to do the rears. At 37K the rears shouldn't be too bad. This is also assuming you arent brake happy or a two footed driver. Brakes are simple just make sure to have the right tools.

I just got an Atlantic British catalog in the mail and they have a complete EBC kit on sale for right at 500, not so bad for the whole kit.
