Default Fuel pump

What is involved in changing a fuel pump on a '99 DII? Any info would be appreciated.

My wifes went out on her 01, but she always runs it on the low end of the tank. Not to mention it was 106 degrees the week it went out.

At any rate, my mechanic replaced it parts and labor for five hundred dollars, said it was in the fuel tank if I recall correctly.

I would suggest your wife start riding a bike till she learns to take better care of her wheels.

By the way, it is easy to replace and around $400 in parts.

Hi
I replaced my fuel pump at the side of the road when it gave up on me.
You roll up the carpet in the back of your truck undo about 5 screws and if I remember rite you unscrew a metal seal cap, take off the fuel lines, un plug the jack plug for the electrics and the pump basically lifts out. It took longer to take the carpet up and put back than it did to replace the pump. The lift pump here in the UK cost me £185 trade; Mike is spot on with 400 Bucks, the lift pump and sender unit for the fuel gauge is all one part. I guess the whole job for an experienced mechanic should take no longer than half an hour, so if you got a bill for 1 or 2 hours labour plus parts it would be about rite.

Well, heres whats going on with the fuel pump problem. Truck sputtered and stalled, most of the idiot lights came on. After cranking the engine for about 45 seconds, it started, the SES light stayed on but seemed to run fine. the low fuel light came on on the way home. Let truck set for a while and re- started with no problem. SES light went out. Next day, started fine so I headed out towards the gas station. Started acting up again, idiot lights again SES light on again. Turned around and went home and parked it.
Next day, Started fine, no idiot lights (SESlight went out again) and idled good. Went to gas station in other truck, filled a 5 gal. can with PREMIUM gas,
Put gas in truck. Re- started and ran fine. Chanced a trip to the gas station again, so far, so good. Put in $26 worth of gas, drove home. So far, so good.
Drove around in sport mode for awhile, gunning it every chance I got. So far,
so good. Wife took truck to wal-mart (about a three mile drive), truck seems to run fine now, no idiot lights and no longer seems to be running poorly.
possible conclusions:

1) Wife got some bad gas at the Arco.
2) There is water in her tank.
3) Fuel cap not venting properly causing a vacuum in the tank that starves the pump (Is this even possible?).

Fuel pump seems to be working "normally" So I told Her to make sure she doesn't use that arco location no more and to use PREMIUM gas only and don't let it go below a quarter-tank.
She usually alternates mid-grade with premium.

What do y'all think?

i honestly don't know much about the fuel system on our cars...but my mom's 2007 Acura RDX had several fuel delivery issues. sputtering, idiot lights etc, dealer kept saying it was the gas cap. 3 trips to the dealership, they decided to check the tank....a family of palm rats had chewed though (partially) one of the fuel lines and part of the tank giving it no pressure...

Had a similar thing happen with our old Porsche, just got some bad fuel. Did the same thing as you and I was in the clear.

However, the exact same thing happened with my wife's rover when her fuel pump went out, I thought I was in the clear, but then a few days later, it never started again.

The more fuel that is in the tank, the easier it is on the pump, so if the pump is on its last leg, it will act up more with less fuel in there(the heat is tough on them too).

Just don't drive it too far for the next few days, hopefully your problem has past, but if not, then....

Good luck.
