For about a week now the SEL light comes on when I get on the Freeway.
I've cleared it twice and its comes back on the second cylce like the RAVE manual states. The fault code Read is P0734-Gear 4 Ratio Incorrect Recently I switced from the factory 18" rims to a set of factory 16" rims with 255/70/16 BFG Mud-Terrains. There is also a loud click (which i think is the transmission downshifting) when i get off the freeway but it only happens under deceleration at approximately 23-30mps and then pressing on the gas pedal. The Vehicle is '03 Disco with 75k. Any suggestions on where to start would be helpful. Thanks. |

Is that the ONLY code it is throwing?
Do you have any bank lean codes? If you have bank lean codes + incorrect gear ration you need a new MAF.

Oh really!
About 2 weeks ago I pressure washed the motor to get rid of some built up grime. I let the motor dry for about 2 hours and when i went to start it up it ran horribly. These were the codes: P1300- Misfire Random P0304- C-4 Misfire P1319- Misfire low fuel P0301- Cylinder 4 misfire P0171- Too lean Bank 4 P0174- Too lean bank 2 After clearing the codes they havent returned the only code that continues to appear is P0734 Gear 4 Ratio Incorrect |

P1300 & 1319 I have no clue about.
I thought 301 was for a cylinder 1 misfire and 304 is cyl 4. Sorry, thats beside the point. If they haven't come back just keep an eye out. 0171 (Bank 1 lean) and 0174 (Bank 2 lean) + 0734 is definantly your MAF. They may not all be showing up at once but if you let the light come on a few cycles, they'll probably eventually all show back up together.

It doesn't have the shaky rought idle it did after the pressure washing.
But I have notice that since it first happened when the engine is cold it idles rough sometimes but not always. After the engine warms up it will shake like it is missing occasionally. I dont know if this is relevant but yesterday when I went to put it into gear it wouldnt move until I revved the motor then it suddenly popped into gear. |

Well, I suppose that I am in the same boat, or rather truck as it may be now. I bought my truck with a blown head gasket - 135k miles. (Yeah, that's a risk....I was willing to take that chance.) I am trying to wrap up all the loose ends now - SES light, soft brakes, etc.
After the head job, I got the following, P0734 and P0134 - No activity (Not surprising considering the engine was dumping unburnt fuel into the sensor.) Cleared and drove - then only P0134 came back. Replaced upstream sensors and then P0734, P0134 and P0174 appeared but the truck hadn't been driven enough to clear codes. I drove it for a bit to "reprogram" ECU and it stayed clear for a few hundred miles. Then P0734 is back with P1668 and P0174 pending. MikeChiro01, I'll race you to DAP to get a MAF. Anyone disagree or agree with that assessment? Micah

Mike,
Do you run a K&N air filter? Do you let your filter dirty? Either of these will kill your MAF. As for power scrubbing your engine, D2's take the water well, your mistake was letting it sit after you washed the engine. Next time clean it and go, don't let water soak into the electrics. By the way, I power scrub my engine at least after trail. Mike |

Disco, I thought you were in MOAB?
FYI - I found a MAF from Coventry West (local and @ Coventry West, Inc. - New, Rebuilt, Used Jaguar & Land Rover Parts) for $199. I hope to pick mine up this afternoon. I do not run a K&N. Hopefully MikeChiro doesn't either.

Disco Mike-
No I dont run K & N. Had some experience with K & N's on another truck caused MAF problems. I had the filter replaced with my last oil change about a month ago. I cleared the codes from the pressure washing incident. We were at Rover Rendezvous 8 and on the way home is when the light came back on. The trail we did that day was super dusty. That powdery kind of dirt that gets in everything. Sooooo.....would you advise cleaning the MAF and seeing what happenes? Ironically the SEL went away on its own yesterday. I havent checked the codes yet to see if its still the same codes. I agree that pressure washing the motor shouldn't have been a problem. Although I did spend a lot of time in the back near the coil as most disco owners know a lot of oil accumulates there. Possibly could have got some moisture in in the coils. Forgot to use WD-40 before starting. I was actually prepping the motor as I have the Magnacor's at home and the intake gasket set on the way. Hopefully i can slow down some of the seepage and drips on the garage floor. |

Ok so last night I'm out in the garage installing my new OME Steering Stabilizer and decided to pop the hood to take a look since the install was like 10 min.
Lo and Behold the clips that hold the MAF to the air cleaner box were broken and the MAF was hanging loose completely exposed with no air filtration. About a month ago when I had the car serviced he mentioned some clips being broken but I didnt realize they were these clips. There's no way to fix the broken plastic except to replace the top of the aircleaner and by new circlips from what I can tell. So I'm assuming this caused the MAF to read too much air hence the lean codes. Maybe the MAF isnt bad after all. I want to thank all of you for your quick responses and if the MAF is bad ill certainly get one from Tony. Thanks Mike |
