If you have a 5 speed, your scryncros are shot.
I can begin to understand your second question, can you be more clear?

Correct me if Im wrong someone;

There are two basic kinds of manual transmissions.

Syncromesh and non-syncromesh.

99.9% of all cars have a syncromesh. non-syncromesh transmissions are used in tractor trailers and other really really big trucks.

When you push in the clutch and change gear, the syncro helps mesh the gears together properly without grinding it. This can only be accomplished properly by releasing the load/tourque on the tranmission. In other words, pushing in the clutch.

On a non-syncromesh transmission, to change gear, you do not require the clutch. It can remain engaged, however, you are required to match the engine RPM to the speed of the transmission to change gear. This is also called rev match. You can do this on any transmission, although I dont recommend it on a new car.

===

What you are experiencing is the syncro has worn on 2nd gear. When you change fast, it wont go into gear because the syncro wont match speeds with the gears. When you change slow, it allows the worn syncro time to sync, or you are simply rev matching unknowingly. Most normal shifts rev match anyways.

Can this be repaired? In short, it requires a transmission rebuild.

Will it harm the transmissoin to drive with it? In short, the damage is done. Careful driving and transmission care and you can drive as much as you like.

Recommendations:

Check the oil level.

Try an oil like Ams-Oil Redline, or other high end brand of oil. Make sure its the same weight as the old oil.

Hi Wayneus 1

I can't tell you much about your gear problem as I drive an auto, but regarding your fuel consumption that sounds a bit excessive £10 per 30 miles, diesel is around £5 per gallon yes that’s rite 10 dollars a gallon here in the UK so your only getting 15 miles to the gallon. It sounds like your injectors need cleaning or at the very worst replacing, I would start with a fuel additive to clean the injectors and see if it improves your mileage. I drive an 03 TD5 and at the very worst in cold weather it has never dropped below 22 to the gallon doing short trips around town, on a run I’ll get 28 to the gallon, yours should be the same or even a little better running 4 cylinders and a manual gear box.
