Default Gear Shift

On starting my Land Rover last night the shift was really stiff. Had to force the shift into gear. Shift was also really vague...second slipped to fifth instead of third. In neutral moving the shift to the left, it stayed in that position.

This morning - problem seem to have gone ? Can it be that the selector mechanism is getting dry..Really worries me....

Did you get a SES light? If so see what the codes are. You could also check your AT fluid level. That would explain why it was hard to put into gear, but I dont know about slipping gears.

I think that would be the best place to start looking. Have you been out playing, may got some mud or dirt build up on the linkage?

No warning lights...nothing out of the ordinary. Not "slipping" gears...it's just the move from 2nd to 3rd ...usually as soft forward movement into 3rd.But instead of 3rd you land up in 5th.

What grated my carrot is the fact that it was so hard to move...then the next morning..fine.

Did some deep water/mud stuff, but had the engine/chassis well cleaned when we got back.Had a 20000k service last month...complained about some stiffness in the 1-2 shift. Was told that this was normal in the DiscoII .Said I could replace the syncro's under warranty, but it would not change anything. Did check everything (they said) and replaced the gear lever spring.Spoke to the dealer this afternoon...will be taking it in.
