i recently bought a house in the 'burbs and i'll need to commute via my D2 rather than the subway. knowing that the D2's gas mileage leaves quite a bit to be desired, i was wonderring what mods would help me boost my mpg's. i was leaning toward a true dual exhaust, new set of 8mm magnecor wires, replace the plugs and air filter, and change the fluid in the diffs/transfer case. i've also read that upping the tire pressure by 5 lbs can help.
would the dual exhause help that much or would a custom single show me roughly the same results? thoughts? suggestions? anything i may have over-looked?

How many miles on your truck?
Forget the dual exhaust, would give you more then 1/2 MPG at best, sure not worth the cost. Cut your rear resinator off and leave the exhaust alone. Use only a factory air filter or you will land up buy a new MAF. Yes, raise your air pressure, run 91 or 93 octane. Good tune up, induction cleaning, all synthetic fluids and gas additive will help. If you are up ober 90K in mileage, consider new 02's and that is all you can do. Don't know what you are getting now but on the road, you should get up to around 18 plus. Mike |

ouch! it's an '03 with about 45k but i'd bet i'm not pulling down any better than 12 - 15 mpg. i also go like a bastard on the hiway and i don't think the aerodynamics of the truck are doing me any favors! i always run 93 octane super unleaded from name brand gas stations. what about getting rid of the resonator and replacing the factory muffler with a performance muffler from flow master or dynomax? i've run these both in passenger cars with great results. also, what's the deal with "sport mode"?

I chopped off my resonator and added a Magnaflow muffler plus a K and N filter(some say these ruin your MAF) and added a little over 1 MPG.
Sport mode will use more fuel. Keep your Disco under 70 MPH, that will help too.

I found that sport mode is good for those with oversize tires and stock axle gearing. It allows longer gear change, thus allowing the transmission to shift at higher r.p.m and helping to turn the bigger tires. Almost like you had lower gearing in regular mode. But of course with regular size tires, running higher r.p.ms will cause m.p.g to drop.

2004 Discovery II driver

27,000 on my truck. 93 octane. mobil 1 synthetic oil. no resonator, replaced stock muffler with a magnaflow one. i got 18-19mpgs on the interstate when i drove home (pre exhaust) with pumped up tires. i have a feeling i lost some pressure during the week, didn't air up any more in the week, that very well could have led to less mpgs... but i ended up getting like 15.5 mpg on the interstate yesterday
then again i was running at 79mph yesterday, i guess if i slowed it down to 70 that would help alot.....i made a record low gas mileage for my trip from FLA to AL yesterday, but i made record time too haha.

mike - first off, i want to thank you for the time you took to reply and give me advice. just to clarify, after you had advised me to scrap the dual exhaust idea, i was asking about replacing just the stock, restrictive muffler with a hi flow muffler. i have access to a shop where a buddy of mine can cut off the existing muffler and weld up a new one, as well as chopping off the resonator and replacing it with a staight pipe (w/ turn down of course). so the whole shooting match would run me the cost of the muffler, which with his discount would be around $60, or about 18 gallons of gas. say no and i'll leave it alone - just wanted to make sure we were on the same page and i didn't know if that info would sway you one way or the other.
i'll heed the warning about the k&n filter, i had actually read that elsewhere as well. is there anything that you would recommend over the stock filter or is it best practice to just replace them on a regular basis? anything else you can add that might add up to more mpg's? thanks again ... and for what it's worth, driving 70 mph on the freeway ain't nothing like the way i drive a sports car (LMAO!).

yeah i cruised at alot higher speeds in a sports car lol...cruising isnt an issue with gas nearly as much as accelerating, slow and steady wins the race for MPGs with acceleration.

You could try what I did to improve my Landie's gas mileage it cost less than 500 bucks and I went from 10-12 mpg in town and 14-16 highway to 23-25 in town and 28-30 mpg highway. It was really easy and has allowed me not have a stroke everytime I fill up.

There is a plug n play chip that you can get on Ebay for like 10-20 bucks. I haven't tried it yet but the theory behind it is sound, just remapped the ignition and combustion curves to be more optimal as the manufacturers program for max emmisions from the factory! I figure for only 10-20 bucks and ten minutes of time it's worth a try, they claim 5-7 mpg increase and 15 hp increase and with gas prices the way they are a 2-3 mpg increase would be great!
