Default grinding noise

when my 99 disco II is in drive but not moving like at a stop sign there is a grinding noise coming from under the car. once you put it in park the sound goes away. Also when you put the pedal to the floor as it is accelerating it starts lurching foward all the way up to about 60 mph. Is this something to do with the drive shaft?

How many miles on the truck? Are the drive shafts original or have they been rebuilt? Do you have any mods.?

Sounds like it may be a tranny issue, but we can't hear the noise to get a better idea... Any idea when the tranny was last serviced?

Driveshafts arent moving when the truck is stationary, so I wouldnt think that its that. Perhaps a heat shield vibrating somewhere?

Look under the truck while you have it in drive, if one of the drive shafts is moving, yhen you have a blown diff ot busted front axle.

So, have you done what I asked, when you do, we can probably tell you what is wrong.

yes i did and the drive shaft is not moving when i get under the truck. The noise sounds like its coming from the t-case. The noise sounds alot like a diesel engine idling, when i first heard it i thought a diesel was in front of me.

If neither drive shaft is turning when the tranny is in drive and you are hearing a grinding sound, then it is safe to say your t/case may then have failed.

Are the orgianl owner? If not the first owner didn't take care of this truck at all with only 50k.... Is there a leak anywhere around the transfer case? If not it could be a bad thing, very bad thing... Try to check the t-case fluid. If you don't have any then we've nailed your problem. My transfer case leaks a very small amount, maybe 1 drop every day or 2.

I'm even confused about this and your test.

Tranny in drive *AND* wheels turning, should make both driveshafts turn, not just tranny in drive, and someone holding the brake.

What I was saying was if when in drive, if neither drive shaft was turning, at a stand still, then it is not either a broken diff or axle which would leave me to think the tranny is turning but the t/case has experienced an internal failure and is not allowing power to either drive shaft.

Yeah, but by his description;

"when my 99 disco II is in drive but not moving like at a stop sign there is a grinding noise coming from under the car. "

it sounds like he is in drive, but foot on the brake,he's not trying to move.. so it doesn't seem like the power is there to be transferred to the driveshafts.

What happened when you put it in neutral instead of drive? Is the sound still there?

yes i am the original owner. I have always taken care of the rover but it has been a huge lemon from the start. I have spent thousands of dollars on repairing the thing. But when it is in neutral the sound is not there. The sound is also intermitent, it stops then it will start going again. But it has been doing it a year maybe longer with no problems. Does the t-case have anything to do with the lurching under heavy acceleration, because i was told that fouled spark splugs will make a car do that
