Hello,
I have a head gasket leak on my 2000 DiscoII. I have 130k miles on it. My mechanice says that the job will be about $3500, a little less than what LR says which was expected. I cannot afford to fix this leak and am thinking of using a product like Nanotechnology Head Gasket & Block Repair. I will probably trade the car in soon as the car is expensive to repair now that I am not working, Anyone have any experience with this product? Does it work? Thanks, Bill |

Your mechanic is a thief.
I just had mine done by a good Rover shop, using all Rover parts and head bolts, it cost my a little over $1400. I know many people who have paid the same basic price, so shop around and whatever you do, don't use any of the aftermarket fix-it's, they only make one un godly mess when they fail and you still have to open up the engine. E-mail me with your tele number if you want to talk about this. Mike |

True, I don't know where he lives, but I do know that the average shop will charges apx $275 for aqll the Rover gaskets, bolts and fluids. I know that there is a flat rate of 10 hours on that job plus an additional 2 hours for secondary air, so now lets worse case it at $150 an hour, you are now at $1800 in labor and parts totaling $2075. Most independent shops are at $100 an hour, so now we are back at about $1475.
So unless you, Elemental, gouge your customers, my numbers should be inline with the shop you work in. By the way, I call 3 different dealers here in Denver as well as 2 independent shops, and the dealers ran in the $2200 to $2400 range and the independents were both in the $1400 range, so this was not an Irresponsible statement on my part. $275 in parts. Really? Little light. Plus, we dont know what other parts are being replaced, do we? 130k...I would include in my estimate a valve job at the very least. Maybe, because it has high miles, the shop is including replacement heads in the estimate to CYA? I dont know, and neither do you.
Bottom line,I would like to see the estimate before I would make such a statement. There are some people that would run right into the shop bitching about how they are robbing them because some guy on the internet told him so. I did nto gouge when I was in the feild, and I dont tolerate it from my employees or students. I do, however, give my customers as complete a view as I can. And, i always estimated a worst case estimate so my customers would be prepared for as bad as it can get. I am not saying this guy may nto be shooting high....I'm saying that judgement should be reserved untill all the information is known.

When I had mine done, it was in the $1500 range, and I have secondary air, so that price does seem a little steep to me. HG is a good time to do a lot of things, like new plug wires, thermostat, water pump, serp. belt, throttle body heater gasket, etc, so I guess the price could go up from there.

I paid a total of $1300.00 for the whole job with new rockers. It's true however that they only charged me 6 hours instead of 10, because the owed me.
But lets get something clear.....It is NOT because you bring your Rover to the dealer, that you have better mechanics working on it. Chances are that the independant mechanic is way more experienced than most guys at the dealership. |

So call around and shop the estimate, based on number of hours charges, how much an hour, estimate of parts, and don't let them try and sell you alot of head related work till it is actually torn down, then you may need to resurface the heads but usually nothing else.

Of course, if you decided to sell it, by all means try it out. ---------------- As for repairs, I've been quoted for headgaskets, timing cover, sump cover, parts and labour from Land Rover and it was $3400 CAD. $850 of that was parts. Getting the heads rebuilt completely and a few modifications as well (3-way valve job, exhaust polish) was $700/pair from a local machine shop. Expensive trucks these tend to be. |

"Chances are that the independent mechanic is way more experienced than most guys at the dealership." should be "Chances are that the independent mechanic is way more experienced than most guys at the dealership, because they are usually the old senior mechanic who got fed up the the crap they have to deal with at the dealership and decided to go off on their own."

And to add to the convo, I don't have the bill anymore, and it was a few years ago, but if I remember correctly, my head gasket job on my 2k1 D2 at the dealership was about $2100.. luckily covered under extended warranty.
