Default head gasket replace help

I have a 2001 discovery with 78000, The truck ran hot and the head gasket is shot i believe. My wife was driving and the temp light came on. She stopped and park the truck. I have found some coolant in the oil. Was planning on pulling the heads and have them rebuilt.

Should I have anything special done to the heads?

What gasket kit should i buy and from who?

I do not have a shop manual, is there anywhere i can download the instructions to start the work, would like to tear apart tomorow dont have time to wait for a manual.

Is there anything else I should do while I have the heads off?

How long did she drive it while it was hot? Quiet often when they overheat and you intermix the fluids, it can be caused by a dropped sleeve.
You will need to verify that first, as for the head, put a straight edge to them, I think the limit is .004, if they are warpped over that you will need to resurface and inspect for cracks, valves shouldn't need an work done on them.
Go to Atlantic British or DAP and order one of the factory head gasket sets and a full set of new head bolts. Past that, change out the hoses and the t/stat, probably replace the serpentine belt if it is showing any wear as well as the belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
As for instructions, find yourself a Rave CD with the shop manual on it, great way to go.
Good luck,
Mike

If, when she pulled over, she had let the engine idle with the heater on full hot so the engine would cool off, you would have a better shot at no engine damage. Unfortunately most people do what they think is the right thing, shutting the engine off and allowing it to get even hotter before it slowly starts to cool off.
Hope you luck out and don't loose the engine.

If you are doing this work yourself and you have a machine shop in mind already to do any machine work I would probably have the head and valves done. You have the engine apart...This is the time to take any variables out of the equation! Have the machinist check the heads and at least re-surface the heads. You will end up with a perfect surface to start with (for the head gasket and the manifold gasket). They will also clean the entire head inside and out so you will have no sludge, carbon, etc anywhere. They can lap the valves and have them seating perfectly. ask if they will check the exhast manifolds as well. You will already have them apart, so all you will need to do is unbolt three more bolts on each side ( i am pretty sure you can pull them right out without much trouble, just remember to get new deformed exhaust nuts and clean up the threads on the studs before you re-assemble)

As you can see, I am a proponent of doing more work while you are in there already. Good luck!

this work is fairly inexpensive. Inquire about the price and check it out yourself. I think you may be pleasantly surprised!

Not so,it is then an oppertunity to have the old liners removed.Get the block machined to fit stepped liners, this way the head gaskets have something to seal against and hold the liners firmly in place. When LR bored the v8 out to 94mm bores its what should have been done in the first place.

Thanks for clearing that up. But I keep reading everywhere that a drop sleave means a new block.

For the most part it does. In the UK, there are a few shops that try and rework the block, we don't.

Whilst its true that alot of Rover v8's have been scrapped, here in the UK there are now a few places offering stepped liner fitting or as an exchange unit.It really does work - but as with all these things, only if its done properly.

Mike - you may not,but the stepped liners originated in the US,and its a well known process. To throw away an otherwise good engine seems a very wasteful thing to do.

Just got around to fixing the head gaskets. Heads just got back from the shop. Got head gasket kit from Dap. Do I need to use any gasket maker or adhesive or anything like that whren i am installing the gaskets. I got a new water pump, serpentine belt, plugs, wires and thermostat, anything else i should change while i am there.
