Default HELP! Dead on side of road..

04 D2 140k. Started making a random tick at 70mph. Looked behind and saw white smoke out the back, pulled over ASAP, coolant dumped out all over the ground in a HURRY. Got picked up to go to work and sitting here with head in hands, wondering what my first move is. What am I looking at first, second, third etc. I'll hopefully be leaving work here to take a look at it and get it towed.

That would probably be a headgasket. Check your coolant level for a big drop.

I would be happy if that was all that happened to me if I were in your place, but you have real problems.
If you want to mull over your options, send me your number and let's talk.

Rover is in the shop and will see what we find in the morning. At 1st glance looks like the bearing for the water pump blew and shifted the pulley forward which in turn took out chunks of each blade on the fan. Doesn't look like any damage to the rad. Just worried about the block after the obvious loss of all coolant. The limited duration of drive and cold MN winter might have helped save the Rig from the boneyard. Let's all cross our fingers and toes and other stuff, for if the block is taost, another Rover will join the graveyard.

So, I just heard from the mechanic and he says I need a new water pump, fan and clutch assembly and a new t-stat and perhaps a new belt. I don't have a problem with this. However, his 'offer' right now is he can get a factory Rover water pump ($240) factory t-stat ($60) and a used fan clutch assembly for $125. He said 2hrs labor for a total of around $790.00. I said I could get everything but the fan clutch ass. for cheaper andhe told me he wouldn't warranty the labor (I understand that) and he would put a ssurcharge on the labor to make up for the lost revenue for ot getting the parts from him. I'm trying to save money and get better parts and he's trying to charge me extra for it.... He said for every dollar I try to save by doing this he will charge me $0.70. Am I way off base to think this is strange? In other words he's going to get his money one way or another....

Default HELP! Dead on side of road..

After just doing a head gasket job I would say dive in it yourself. It's fairly easy and u can get tools u need but don't have at your local autozone. I did it in the cold in Chicago and still had fun.

Well, you know where not to go in the future.
Why not, as suggested, do it your self, none of it is hard.

I wouldn't dare give that guy another penny. This is one of those shops that ends up on an undercover investigation show for their shady practices.

Okay, well I'm almost convinced to do it myself. Of course the most frightening thing is getting it wrong and toasting the engine. Is the RAVE fairly simple to follow to do this job? How long should it take me? What is the most important thing I need to know when doing it so I don't have something catastrophic happen...I'm nervous. 38 yrs young and my palms are sweaty.

AB has the water pumps on sale right now. I have the fan clutch tool I can lend you but I'll have to ask for a deposit (refundable) since I've lost some tools before.

So, what have you decided to do and if back together, are you having any over heat issue?

Well, as of right now I'm supposed to get the rig back on Monday. I'll let you know if anything comes up. Fingers still crossed that my block is still operational.
