Exclamation Help with removing center console

Help!
I'm in the process of a CDL linkage modification on my Disco II and I can't figure how to get the gear shift assembly out of the way to remove my center console.
Does the shifter knob just screw off the shifter-rod, or does the rod screw off of the mechanical bellcrank? or am I doing it all wrong to start with?
