Default Hi. Just bought a Disco 2. Got a CeL.

Just wanted to say hey to everbody as a new member of the forums and rover owner. I just bought a 99 Discover 2 se7 with 69k miles and pretty much all the bells and wistles for $5500. I love the new ride and cant wait for the full "multipurpose vehicle" experience.

About 300 miles after buying it, it threw a check engine light and the people at autozone said it was throwing the light for running too lean - although ill have to go back and get the exact code. Ive been running premium gas in it and was wondering where I should begin to look for the problem?

First two are common lean codes usually caused by a bad MAF, check and sse what you have for an air filter, is it dirty, is it a K&N filter?
Most likely going to need a new MAF.

Its a white accordian style filter with an orange edge holding it together. It doesnt have a brand name of any kind on it, but its fairly clean. Minimal trash in the filter box. How hard is it to get the whole assembly out?

Standard filter, that's good. As for the junk, pull the filter out and shake out some of the junk, if it looks old and real dirty then wipe the junk out of the box and replace the filter.
Safe to say you will need a new MAF.
Shout if you can't find then for under $200 and I will point you in the right direction.

I hit the inside of the filter and the box with a shop vac and it got most of the dirt out. Im gonna run to the store shortly and pick up a couple replacement paper air filters. Ive got a few links for a new maf from searching around on the forums, ill take a closer look at em shortly. But if you have a cheap source in mind i would love to save some cash.

Call Tony at Cerrones, 650-365-4145 for what I believe will be the lowest price.

Since you seem to be heading for a new maf, try taking the maf out, and clean with Q-tips sprayed with non chlorinated brake cleaner. worked for me. Worst case scenario, it won't work and you'll need a new maf, which you're already getting ready to buy.

FYI, to take the maf off, I used vise grips, since the torx bolts have a tit in the middle and calls for specific tool.

wow that worked? I've tried to play the "clean the MAF" game, and it just got annoying (would work a few months, then not, then work a day, then not, then a few weeks then not................................uhhhhgggg)
Anyhow, I'm suprised that worked for you. Most people that try to clean the thing wind up killing it.

Not a wise move with a D2, Bosch MAF, this will normally kill them. A older style D1 MAF can sometimes be cleaned, but by using a good quality electronic contact cleaner, not carb spray that will leave a residue.

Default Just reading

Like Steph said, he's gona buy a new one, why not give it a shot? I know I need a new starter, but why wouldn't I hit it with a hammer to get another 1 - 2,000 miles out of it?
