High Pitch Whine at 70 MPH
Man thank goodness for message boards.
Ok so I've had my 03 disco SE for about 6 weeks. I've noticed there is a high pitch whine that happens around 70 MPH that goes away when I let off the accelerator. Also when I'm decelerating off the freeway and the transmission is down shifting there is a loud "clunk" around 20-30 MPH. It sounds like its coming from the front of the car and not the rear. Any suggestions as to where to start my diagnosis? FYI the first thing I did when I got the car is have the driveline rebuilt with greasable u-joints. That solved the vibration problem. |

Crawl under the truck, check the 2 u-joints that hook the front shaft to the t/case, if there are no grease fitting on these joints, get them replaced ASAP, before they fail and take out your tranny.

When did you last have your t/case serviced or the fluid level checked?
Rovers are know for a little whine, might consider switching to an 85W/140 gear oil, sure quieted mine down. Mike |

Yeah I saw some of your posts regarding the oil.
I actually don't know the service history of the vehicle so a fluid change was going to be my next step. Would that explain the clunking during downshifting? |

When you had the 2 u-joints replaced, did they grease the others including the 2 slip shafts? What sort of shape is your roto flex in, any cracking?
A little lash is normal in the drive train, if this is a new vehicle for you, it may be normal or not, hard to say. Mike |

Yea they used castrol synthetic grease, they balanced it too.
Actually I'm replacing the rear pinion oil seal this weekend and had a rotoflex inspection on the list. I'll try a heavier oil too as you suggest as this car seems to have been someones daily driver. Judging from the apparent lack of service to the common problems Disco II's have my guess is that with 75k on the odo this person didnt want to fix anything and got rid of it. His loss my gain. |

Might want to try the Royal Purple gear oil, buy 7 quarts and do the diffs and t/case. Make sure to inspect the magnetic plugs from the diff, fine metal shavings are fine, bits and pieces aren't.
