I recently bought a 2001 discovery II to replace my totalled XJ, so I don't know it very well yet (total noob!). Anyhow, I took it off road yesterday just to feel it out and now it chirps like a bird when I drive it. The sound gets worse with acceleration but only under load. I got under it and noticed a little play in the front drive shaft so I suspect that's it but not sure. What's the rule for full time 4 wheel drive? Can I remove the shaft and still drive it like I could with my old jeep? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, it can be removed and still drive it for testing. That maybe a seperate issue from the chirping. General rule of thumb, if the DS only has one grease point vs three, replace it, as it will go eventually. Heat burns up the grease and bang out it goes.
Chirping,,, is it coming from under the hood? the undercarraiage? We may need more information.
actually thinking being a 2001 it may be a crap shoot that you can remove your front driveshaft and still drive they stoped installing the center diff lock later on in 2001. you'll have to feel for it right behind the front driveshaft flange. it will be a threaded nipple hanging out up there.

You can remove the front or rear drive shaft and drive on the other as long as you go under the truck and engage the t/case with a 10 mm wrench.
If the noise goes away you will find you probably have a 2 fried u-joints in the front double cardon housing.

Sure enough, it was the front double cardan. I put some cheapo autozone joints in there for now because I need to use it right away and there aren't a whole lot of places open on Sunday in Utah. Lol! At least they're greasable! So what's the deal with the CDL? Why is it such a pain in the butt to get to? I wasn't exactly impressed with the Disco's first off road performance but I took it up the mountain to test my new ujoints with the t/case engaged and whoa! Vindication! Gotta read up on a CDL linkage install now. Thanks for all the posts. This is the most informative forum I've come across!
