Default How difficult to replace these seals?

99 Disco II. Wife's new Disco has a couple of oil leaks I would like to fix. The first is the front crank seal. How hard for the DIY? The second is a leak that I am guessing is coming from the seal where the rear driveshaft goes into the transfer case. This one is more pronounced. There are oil drips that appear to be coming from inside of the e-brake drum as well as on the front of the transfer case. I cleaned everything and no leaks at all until the car is driven. Could that one rear driveshaft/transfer case seal cause fluid to appear on the front of the transfer case as well? What is involved in getting at this seal? Thanks in advance for all the advice.

The front crank seal isn't too hard. You have to pull off your fan and belt, and then the main crank pulley. The new seal just slides right in. The rear main seal, however, is extremely complicated. You have to drop your transmission, if I remember correctly. The way to check if the rear main is leaking, is to pull that gold cover that's on the bottom of your bell housing (it's held on by 3 little bolts), and see if there's any oil in there.

Thanks - I'll definitely do the front seal myself. I may have not been clear on the second leak. There is oil dripping from inside of the e-brake drum on the rear driveshaft as well as from the transfer case cover bolts. I cleaned the entire transfer case with brake cleaner and confirmed that is not a static leak. The cover bolts remained dry. Only after driving it does oil appear. I am assuming that because I am getting oil out of the e-brake drum that the seal going into the rear of the transfer case is bad. Yes/No? How difficult is this seal?

Thanks again - Bill

I've got the same leak on my transfer case/rear drive shaft. ANy luck figuring it out, and how tough was it?
