Well here is the full question.
When I drive hard ( throtle 80% -90% open ) the trany shifts like a normal Automatic that I drove ( rev's up , shift next gear ( rpms drop ) , starts to rev up again ) . BUT when I drive at like 25% -35% throtle ( 2K Rpms ) speed gose up but Rpms stay at 2K ( fluctuate about 100 rpms ) . Also if I'll give it 50% throtle on a incline . The treanny will kind of down shift ( 500 RPMS up ) 2 sec. down shift again ( 500-600 RPMS ) . clims up the 500rpms range . and then up shifts at least 1200 rpms ( a full gear ) . I'm so intreaged how dose this tranny works that makes it look like it has 9 gears ? And that makes it look like it's CVT between Low gear and (OD) gear. Any Land Rover Techs that have any idea how this works? Dose it play with the torqe converter lockup to look like a gear change ? Dose it play with different presure on each gear ( slips a gear untill it gets to the next one ) ? I've rebuild with my dad 4 auto trannys already . One GM , 2 Chrysler , and one Volvo . So I know how they are constructed on the inside and basic idea how they work ( well maybe more then basic then some GM dealer mechanics J/K ) This just bogles my mind . Thank you for any replys

Fist of all, the ZF tranny is run by one small computer and over seen by the ECU, so depending on your speed, your throttle presure, the load on the power train, it will select how it wants to shift. There are no vaccum or cable controls on our tranny, its all governed by the computer as most of the new trannys are.
Yes, the torque convert can feel like an extra gear when it locks up and I am not sure about the valve body using different pressures. I am guessing you have one, are you having a problem with it? Mike |

No I don't have a problem with it .
I was just iterested in how it works . Cause it looks like it ackts like CVT (Constant Velocity Transmition) some times , speed gose up but RPMs stay at 2100RPMs untill it gets into the top gear and then rpms go up cause it's in the top gear and it's at 65 - 70 mph Etc... No one noticed it ? My dad's New Yorker and my Bros Concord ( Same trany , but one is 3.5l V6 and other is 3.3.l V6 LH body ) They change gears smoth and you don't feal it when you drul it ( like i do in my LR at 2k rpms ) , but you can see Rpms go up and down when speed gose up and gear change . And those chrysler cars have trannys that are controled by the ECU ( that's why my bro dose not have 5spd in his concord cause the engine will not start if it will not talk to the tranny) I would imagine that If I would have a problems with it it would slip and slam gears like the concord did one day over 100 miles away from home ![]()
