Doing a random search on GOOGLE I found this video on youtube.com. This guy has the same ticking that I've got on my Disco. I'm starting to think it might be a normal noise. I can't hear it from the cabin, you open the hood and BAM! It might be a valve or lifter? If so I'm running by my napa on the way home from work today, anything I should pick up? BTW, 02 with 73,000, oil FULL run Hi octane gas all the time.

The ticking is common but not normal or good.
Figure out if it is an exhaust leak or a rocket arm and fix it.

i've got a tick, but its no where near that noticeable. i can only hear it in the cabin.

This guy has an exhaust leak.

Steph,

Thanks for your input but.... It really sounds like it's comming from the top of the engine passenger side right at the alternator or possibly behind the alternator.... Taking it to the dealer next week, I'll let you know what I find out.

Well, if you don't want to tackle the exhaust right away, you might want to try an ATF engine flush and see if that works in quieting it down. If there's crud causing the lifters to tick, the cleaning power of ATF might dissolve it.

Is there any way I can look for the exhaust leak without burning her out? Can I see if there's any play near the manifold gasket? I’m going to the beach this weekend, for my peace of mind. What socket size to tighten down, do you remember? Thanks!
