Default I got stuck

Idiotically i went off roading by myself without any equipment in a stock discovery. when i got stuck in some mud, the only wheels that would spin, were the two that were in the mud. I had two perfectly fine wheels on gravel, but they werent spinning. The thing I dont get is why the 4 wheel drive didn't power the only wheels with traction? I thought the whole purpose of 4 wheel drive on a vehicle was to provide power to wheels with traction, when other wheels don't have traction. Am I missing something here?

You have a CDL? What year is your truck? If your CDL isn't engaged then all the power is going to be transfered to your tires that are spinning.

If it makes you feel better I got stuck in 2 feet of hard packed snow and my tires dug in. By myself, no shovel...three hours later of digging with a scrapper and a tire iron and I was out!

Engaging CDL only splits the power front to back. I bet you had one side on mud and one on gravel? ETC should have gotten you out of that. 4WD is only truly 4WD when you have front and rear lockers.

Yeah, if the ETC was operating properly, you should have had no problem getting out of the above described situation. No CDL needed, with how you explained it. I have never gotten close to stuck when one side was on hard pack. Heck, with proper brake modulation to keep the etc locked up, if one wheel has traction, you can pull out of most stuff if you've got good M/T's and aired down.

You have to know how to drive with the CDL and or ETC, it isn't a sure fire thing if you are just out trying to power thru the mud, you need to let the system allow you to crawl out of the mud.

Thats happened to me a number of times. All i did to get unstuck was to turn off the engine and whenever you turn it back on you gun it and all your tires will spin.

you don't want to do that though when the engine is in water itself. but i guess that will work for shallow shit.

I've experienced similar retardedness with no CDL.

However, the key to the ETC/Traction Control is that you have to keep your foot into it at all times. Not alot, just enough. I accually have footage I took awhile back of me trying to cross some shallow ruts. The purpose of the excercise was to see if the ETC could work it out. You can visually see the computer working it out.

Bad suggestion cause there is nothing different when turning off the engine and the ETC will not do much for you.

So what are you running for tires????????????????
Bet that's the problem, the 03 had the first really major improvement when it comes to the ETC.
