Default i think i figured it out

i think the strange noise i was hearing is a bad cat. is it normal for a cat to only make noise after the engine is hot. when i first crank up the engine it does not make noise, only when its hot. also, does a bad cat usually have a rhythmic pulse that lines up with the engine...

When my cats went out in my 1998 D1, they had a somewhat rhythmic sound. It was in fact, around Christmas time when they went out, and I was 100% for sure they were playing the Little Drummer Boy Song! LOL! The catalytic converter consists of a honeycomb like material, once broken down it is free to move inside the metal enclosure allowing for a metallic noise.

If broken, it should like marbles in a can. Turn the truck off, grab a garden hose, and get underneath the truck. Use the hose to bang around on the exhaust system and see if you are able to duplicate or mimic the noise. Careful, it is HOT under there! GOOD LUCK!

I knew you would find it, now you need to find why they failed, such as bad wires, plugs injectors headgasket, or it will happen to the new ones. How many miles on the truck?
Once you finf the problem, you have to decide if you are going to a new Y pipe of 2 new cats. If you want to go the cheap way, check out this web site for great cat prices, http://www.completeexhaust.com/produ...roducts_id=184
How are you O2's?

it may not be my cats aftrerall. it only makes the sound when the engine is hot and it doesn't "rattle" like people say bad cats sound. i have no idea (again) what is wrong. could the tranny or t-case cause a noise like that? i really want to get this figured out. i am praying that nothing is getting seriously damaged. but i have no choice but to drive my truck...

How about going under the truck, with a large screw driver as a hearing device, and listen to the cats, t/case, the bell housing, for the noise. Maybe you have broken your flex plate???
I am just guessing at this point.

Flexplate would have no effect on the tranny and it's performance.
The flexplate replaces the fly wheel on an engine with an automatic tranny, has all the gears that the starter engages with. They are know to crack and cause a weird rattle.
Just put you ear to a screw driver touching the bell housing and see if you hear anything.

Just read about another way to check the catalytic converter. If available use an laser temperature gauge (got mine at Sears) and measure the temp before and after the cat. Should be about 40 C or 104 F difference bewteen the two.

Or so the website said.
