I have an 04 Disco with 55K miles. I have a vibration that I thought was a drive shaft, however after a rebuild ( and rebalance of the driveshaft) I have the exact same vibration. It most noticeable between 67 and 75 or so MPH. It is worse under load. For example..while going up hill at this speed the vibration is so bad that the rear view mirror is blurry. When I back off the accelorator the vibration basically stops. I have taken the following steps

1. Purchased new tires and had them rebalanced at another shop just to be sure.
2. rebuilt the front drive shaft as stated above

What else could this be?

1. Low trans fluid (plan to change it this weekend)
2. Bad motor mount
3. Bad trans mount

This sounds like a stupid suggestion, but have you scraped the interior of your wheels? My '03 had a thick layer of brake dust and road grime that had never been cleaned off (bought it used) and I had the same issue... I felt an immediate difference - all I need to do now is have the tires balanced...

Engine issue, not wheels, tires, or tranny.

just a novice guessing.

The rubber coupler looks great. Changed the transfer case oil and no filings so it looks fine. Still thinking about tire balancing. Has anyone heard of Radial Force Variation balancing? Here is a clip I got from the Mercedes Benz magazine I got the other day..

Just because the rubber coupler looks good, doesnt mean it is. There could be a washer missing off one of the bolts, or one of the bolts is different. Even the slightest ounce could throw it off balance.

I've experienced something similar in another vehicle years ago. The rear driveshaft was bent ever so slightly that at only 55MPH plus it would shake the truck. It took 3 u-joint replacements to figure this out. I ended up changing the shaft for a spare and I never had another problem.

This sounds like more of a rear end problem. Usually if its front end parts, or inner joints, it happens at a much lower speed.

I would perhaps get the rear u-joints replaced (depending on the cost of course) and then the shaft maybe balanced. Or find a spare from somewhere and just replace the whole thing. And of course, replace the rubber coupler.
