Hello everyone this is my first post. According to the DOT, Discos from 1994-1997 and 2000 Disco II are on the safe list to import into the US. I'm interested in bringing in a diesel Disco I or II into the US. Does anyone here know of anyone who has done this with either models? I'm aware of the 25 year rule in which many have brought in LR Series models in. Or does anyone have any info on converting existing Disco II using TD5 engine?

You'll just have to make it conform to the emissions standards for the same model in the US. Thats where you'll likely end up with problems since the diesel was never offered in the US.
I would double check the epa sites on the import rules as well

Not possible without bribing US customs officials, very illegal, or spending gobs of money to also bring it up to DOT regs. If you read it carefully it says it has to be brought in by a registered importer, or an individual who has a contract with one to bring it up to spec. Bringing a grey market car up to spec is not as cheap as it once was, as individuals are no longer allowed to do it themselves.
If it were easy there would be tons of 93 D110's stateside.

I'd buy a stateside gas version with a blown engine, and import the parts to convert it from a 'breaker' in Europe.
It can be done, there are several of them in my general area that came home with returning servicemen. There are no federal emissions standards for them, although there may be state requirements. The actual conversion is mainly lighting and safety equipment; if you do choose to import, look for a german-market car; the DIN standards are actually tougher than the NHTSA standards and you'll only need to change some lenses, AND the german version is left-hand drive. (one of the locals is a right-hand drive). Also, if you handle the importation yourself (through a broker), you have a reasonable amount of time to drive the car while it being brought up to standards; if you go through a vehicle importer, it must be converted before you can take posession. |
