Default Inline thermostat modification done

Finished up installing an inline thermostat last night and got a chance to put about 50 miles on the setup this morning. I'm using a 180* thermostat and driving in 90*+ weather today my temps ranged from 177-185. 185 was only after sitting at idle for 5 minutes and then stop and go through construction zone.

Hardest part of the install was getting the old factory hose clamps off. I had to modify the fan shroud slightly to allow the thermostat housing to sit a little lower and not hit the hood.

parts needed-

Meizere inline thermostat housing
chevy v8 thermostat
lower radiator hose off a 2002 bmw 330
some type of bleeder valve in top hose, i used a 32mm from Glowshift
I went ahead and bought a new upper radiator hose and cut where needed to fit. I also replaced the brittle plastic tubes with 5/16th heater hose.

It gets up to temperature and out of closed loop fine. Fuel mileage was the same today according to scangauge. heater works fine too.

Thanks to everyone in the "Fan Clutch" thread on discoweb for the ideas and parts list!!

Josh is also finishing up on one this weekend.
Did you test your operating temp before you removed the factory set up?
Also,, one thing I mentioned to Josh was to use the larger, higher volumn 180 t/stat which should improve the flow even better.

Mike- my stock operating temperatures were about 193-195 hwy and in traffic btw 205-210.

I know my temps with the factory setup were fine, but i like to tinker with things and so far i like the lower temps.

I am glad you were able to lower the temps. I spoke with Josh earlier today down in the Virgin Islands to see how his modifications were coming along and once I hear from him, I will also look into converting my truck over, especially on days like this when it is nearing 100 degrees here in Denver.

been thinking of doing it my self, but just replaced my vis. fan clutch with the Hayden 2991. gonna run it for a while to see if that makes any difference first.

just a thought.... take out the brass plug for your bleeder, and put in a temp sensor w/a temp gauge so you can see the actual temp. separate from the computer.

I have an 04 Disco with about 86K on the odometer. What problems occured that drove you to modifying the stock system? I have not yet experienced any issues with the stock thermostat. What am I in for.

No real problems with my factory setup. Im not a fan of the factory bypass thermostat that works on water pressure, not temperature. Just thought i'd try something different and bring down the running temps a bit.

do the guys in the arab countries and arizona swap out their stuff for cooler temps. If they don't then don't waste the time.

I finished with my modification yesterday. Here are the pics.
http://picasaweb.google.com/jycsalas...tModification#

I will be reporting my temps at the end of the week as I am gathering my data twice daily in the morning drive to work and in the evening. Outside morning temp is about 80F and afternoon is 96F.

I did this because I don't agree with the current DII cooling system setup and believe that it is one of the main issues that diminish the longevity of our head gaskets. Not to say this is the cure all, but with all else being equal, i think that as cooling system components fail and begin to be less efficient, the pressure operated thermostat fails miserably.

I'd caution anyone driving without a real time data reader i.e...scangaugeII or similar, as the stock temp gauge reads 155 -225 without moving from the center position. So if you can trust that, go ahead. Bare in mind that if you are having issues with your cooling system, you need to get them checked out.

i LOVE this idea... its taking a different parts from different vendors and making the Disco better. did you use the MEZ-WN0072 or the MEZ-WN0071. i see both on summit racing but dont know the difference.

Also where do you get the bleeder valve from? i did a Google and got nothing???

Lastly what thermostat are you using. i know you said Chevy but what one and what temp range?

REALLY nice guys.. i will start to gather the parts to do this too... 107 here today in Vegas so i cannot think of a better mod!

I did in fact try the high flow t-stat on my first mod. What I observed was to much swing in the coolant temp. The hi-flow t-stats don't open until 180 then they flow quick and then close just as quick. The conventional t-stats start opening a little before 180 and are fully opened at 180. This gave a much better consistent temp in the 188-193 range.

i ordered my inline housing (#MEZ-WN0071 which is the 1 1/4 dia) from summit and also picked up a 160' thermostat for better cooling, i got the lower rad. hose from advanced auto and the glowshift 32mm thing i had to buy from them direct at glowshift.

does anyone have a step by step to this yet?

also ....do i have to replace my upper hose near the shroud? the one with the air bleed in it, can i keep this so i dont have to buy anything else?
