Default International HS 2.8L diesel in a D2

I came across diesel conversion kit for D2 - kit 161 - see Land Rover conversions - M&D Engineering - "We have sold many kits for the DII V8. We supply an exchange wiring loom with the kit and the RPM, TPS and temperature inputs from the new engine go through the original engine ECU and comunicate with the BCEM and the original auto trans ECU"

This motor is apparently based on 300tdi but delivers 277ft/lbs torque and 135bhp. Long shot but just trying to find user reviews/comments from anyone who has done this on a D2 ? On web search I see reference to Obwcanada.com but the link is dead. Would be good to hear from folks who have done this and what issues and resultant drive/performance is like.

Contrary to some of the US forum posts, TDI motors are the way to go for SUVs. Bags of torque and great mileage. Ok, cost of diesel may be on high side but mileage improvements are amazing. IN the UK I heard they dropped the gas engine in LR3s and Defenders. 32mpg (imp) vs 17/18mpg with gas.

Thanks

A diesel may be a good choice for a new purchase if the option is available, but the cost of a conversion is probably never going to be recovered. Also, in the US an OBD2 vehicle can't be changed in most states because of emissions regulations so anything sold after 1996 is off limits.

Yea, the only reason to get a diesel is you want a diesel. But don't look to get your money out of it. Don't get me wrong, I love em. My 96 F350 Quad-Cab Dually with the 7.3l Powerstroke gets almost 20mpg empty and 15mpg with a 3200lb camper sitting on it. That's 440 cubic inches (500 lb-ft) pushing a 9000lb barn door down the road and getting 15mpg! Gotta love it.

I want to see someone shoe horn the 7.3 powerstroke into a landie now that would be cool.

Drivetrain would never survive however...

over on discoweb.org Doug(rovingbeetle) did this conversion to a D2 there is a pretty good write up of the project.

I still got my 96 powerstroke 1 ton single wheel 4x4. Freakin beast. Good luck changing the fuel pump. I believe it to be the best diesel ever. The injectors are original and all good. Also an International to stay on topic.

I still want a conversion. But will prolly never do it. Go for it.

Fuel pump was cake. Had the fuel bowl and hpop out, so I replaced/rebuilt everything.

I've had a 2.8 hi-torque fitted to a '96 D1 for about seven years and absolutely love it. The torque is amazing - mine is tuned to 422Nm - and the consumption is just fine at normal speeds. I get the impression this motor will sail well past 160km/h but not going to go there. The problem is that there is no reliable service centre for the motor in Cape Town. LR Service Centre who fitted the motor originally now simply say they "can't get parts" for the 25 customers who fitted these engines. I recently blew the top gasket and after waiting for a month for a reliable Y/N reply from them, contacted M&D in the UK who had the part shipped out that same evening. If you can get past the parts issue, these engines are legend.
