Default Just bought a 04 Disco. What would you do?

Ok so I just bought her about 3 weeks ago.

She's got 36,900 miles on the odo and brand new Pirelli tires. Engine runs strong and the interior is perfect almost. Paint has a few scratches but nothing major. I do notice a tapping noise when I let off the gas in 1st gear (or any gear). When the windows are down I hear it well. I am going to check for any loose bolts under there...maybe a loose y pipe gasket or something. I also found an invoice in the glove box stating the previous owner had the ECU/left rear window regulator replaced and an oil change at 34,000 miles in June of 07.

I have only changed the oil and filter. So far that's all the maintenance I have done. So my question is...What would you Disco owners do maintenance wise if you were in my shoes? It's my daily driver by the way. (for now)

Thanks!!

Is you truck still in warranty?
Talk with the local dealer and have them check to see if the 30,000 mile service was done, if not, you have alot of work in front of you.
Hope you enjoy yor truck.

Hey thanks Mike!

Just got off the phone with Land Rover of Dallas and was told the 30k service was done at 28k in May of 07 and a basic oil change at 31k. Guess I am ok in the oil change dept.

Any guesses on the annoying tapping sound from the under car after letting off the gas?

Are you still in warranty????????????????????
As for the noise, lifter, rocker arm or exhaust leak.

Default Or...

Just found out that my tick while idling was my tensioner and drive line... Might help.

Mike, no...I am not under warranty any more. My tapping noise is intermitent. It's not like a lifter or engine related type of constant ticking. Rocker arm could be the problem.

brian4d....My noise happens when it's either in gear or in neutral while i'm still in motion. The noise goes away when I am in park or just stopped in any gear. Perhaps it could be the tensioner as well. I'll look into that too.

Anyhoo somethings gotta be loose. I'll check it out over the weekend and let you all know.

Is it a rotational noise? Increase/decrease in relation to vehicle speed?

It's not a rotational noise...it's far and few between...it does not happen when the engine is given gas. It happens when there is no load on the engine or tranny.

When I let off the gas and coast you can hear it tap. You know like when you put it in park or reverse sometimes you can hear that clunk sound when it engages? That's the exact noise I hear when in motion. (drive and neutral)

This mystery noise is becoming an obssesion! LOL...I'm just going to tighten every single bolt I can find under there and see what happens.

Well, you're better off freekin out about the noise than learning to live with it and then BANG, you lost your front driveshaft and it killed your tranny. With this said, check the front driveshaft for aftermarket greasable U-joints ( the lower one is greasable from factory but the 2 upper ones are not) if you don't have them, get them done. I would also check the transmission for oil level. Don't bother looking for an underhood dipstick for the tranny, they don't have them. You gotta dive under and remove the fill bolt. Do a search for the proper way to check the tranny fluid.
