Default Just developed a new cheap CDL shifter system

Thought I would share this with you all, been a bit sick for the last few days so decided to look at how i could make a cheap easy CDL shifter for my 99 landy.
there is a detailed write up on my web site (there are no ads so dont panic)

Landrover CDL install

I wanted something cable operated but that could be made by the average "do it yourselfer"

there is only 1 bit that needs to be welded and for those who cannot weld or dont have someone close by who can weld I will sell them the bit for $25
here are some pics, its a modified standard transfer box shifter and all the details are at my web site

the systemready to go into the landy

the modified spindle tapped for screwing in the transfer case shifter

the bit that needs welding (I will make some and sell them for $25 to those who cannot weld - just the basic part)

all the bits you need check my website

the sytem partially fitted

just a taste of it. hope it helps anyone who want to add the CDL changer without spending a fortune

cheers

what did you do with the boot? also the shifter arms being so close do the two knobs interfere with each other? finished pic request.

i just didn't like the action, it just seemed to sloppy but at the same time difficult to engage. i don't know maybe my offset wasn't quite right. but having driven 04's and knowing what the cable system felt like i wasn't keen on the d1 linkage.

the last picture on my website is as far as i got today. probably finish it on tuesday. I can tell you that even with an 8 ball knob the two levers dont touch each other at any point. I deliberately made the CDL lever short and it has just over an inch movement to engage and disengage - the power of leverage! - so probably a small hole for the lever to come through the boot and there will be enough slack in the boot vinyl for the lever to move the small amount required, otherwise maybe a half inch trimmed slit. I am not sure yet.

I have heard the same, I tried a friends D11 with the D1 linkage and it was, as you say, both sloppy and yet stiff to move. May just of been his set up though. I decided either the 2004 shifter or some other cable shift system. they just feel better to me. I'm sure its just a personal feel thing.

I'll post more pictures when complete.
cheers

Got it, I have the D1 linkage and hear it is harder to engage it versus the cable action of the 04.

That is great work. If my electric actuator from down under fails and goes to hell, then I know there are more options! can't wait to see it finished.

Default CDL shifter completed

just thought I would update you all, its complete other than a better shifter knob (this one is a cut down 8 ball knob for now)
I sewed up a double shift boot to go on the original surround and all works as it should in hi and lo range. very easy to shift. my web site is now updated with all of the new info.

good luck if you try
cheers

cool, thats not to bad. the cut down eight ball would be fine just give it a good sanding get rid of the etched cdl and spray it a satin carbon black and it would be good to go.

cant get rid of the etched CDL just yet, that was my daughter helping me. Its like ties for Christmas - you have to wear them at least once.
