Default Knocking Engine / Service Engine Soon Light

Hello All,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my 02 Disco.

The last couple of mornings, when I have started my disco, the engine would knock for a few seconds until it idled for a few seconds. This morining, while the engine was knocking, the 'Service Engine Soon' light came on. Since I haven't changed my oil in 5,000 miles, I figured I should go ahead and change it (I admit I've been a little lax and busy lately). Now for my questions:

1) Could the old oil be the cause of the knock?

2) Is the 'Service Engine Soon' light related to the knocking engine (i know it sounds like a dumb question), and if so what could it be?

3) Is it possible that I have caused any major damage?

4) If there really isn't a problem, how do I reset the light (I've read a few postings that say disconnecting the battery may work)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

1. Yes and no. While old could be causing this my guess is a lack of oil would bee more likely because you said its only been 5000 miles.

2. Anytime your engine is knocking thats never a good thing. So would they be related I would say yes. Does it feel like your disco is idling ruff or more that parts are just grinding.

3. If you engine is knocking because two peaces are well knocking together and you run it for an extended period of time then yes its possible.

4. You will need to have the code reset a dealer because the problem has to be resolved before the code can be reset.

It feels like it's idling rough, but only for a few seconds. The rough idling only occurs first thing in the morning (after the disco has sat overnight), subsequent starts during the day do not cause the problem.

Don't drive it any more until you can get it into a mechanic, then plan on leaving it over night so they can hear the noise prior to doing any work on it. Any additional knocking will just cause additional damage.

I believe I have a similar knock. First thing in the morning for about the first 10-15 seconds I hear a tapping then it goes away. I like you only noticed it after I left the oil in there for over 5k miles. At that point it tapped constantly and the dealer said it was a little lown. It needed and oil change by that point any way.
I am currently doing a gentle engine flush in hope that the tapping will go away. You have to really listen for it but the engine is still being cleaned. Change the oil every 3k. Castrol GTX is good. My dealer tells me to change it every 3k.
I would follow Disco Mikes suggestion and take it to a mechanic, the tap and SES may not be related.
