Sorry, I would have answered but was having computer issues.
I just suggested that he try and flush the engine to iliminate at least a few possibilitys. From what I heard back there was a good improvement, he is going to drive it for a week and then decide the next step, mechanical oil pressure test and or a partial pull down of the top end to inspect for rocker or lifter issues.

Thanks for sharing. But I already knew about the flush. Guess I'm becoming Rover smarter by the minute thanks to discoMike.

If I may...I'd switch to synthetic oil and 3001 K&N oil filter. The flush, synthetic oil and K&N filter cured my knocking problem.

Come on Mike...We're still in august. Snow is what 3 months away, 4 if we're lucky. Last year we spent a green christmas. Not that I don't like snow. Just not in the city, with all the traffic that it causes and everything. YUK!

Ya, you guys really got plastered last year. And to think that you call Canada the great white north. Geez...We only get a fraction of the snow that you guys get!!!!! What you have in one snowfall is our total for the whole winter. And that's if that storm is 2 feet or less. But darn does it get cold over here though.

WOW!!! The weather has been pretty weird this summer. Anyhow, I used Mobil 1 filter and oil after flushing the engine. I still hear the knocking/ticking noise slightly, yet I haven't drove the truck lately b/c my extended warrenty is near its expiration date I only put about 250 miles sine the engine flush. Do I need to drive it more. By the way, Does anyone know of a good extended warranty provider? CarChex is tying to sell me a premium package for $3,419 for 4yrs and/or 48,000 miles. How does that sound? Anyone?

While you have that engine noise, I would get it into the dealer, leave it over night and have them cold start it and see what they say. Don't mention anything about a flush unless they do and even then i wouldn't tell them you just did one or they may try and blame the noise on the flush, which of course is BS.
What year and how many miles on your truck?

If we had not been in our Disco we would not have made it to Colorado Springs at Xmas last year. Are you looking forward to another storm like that one?? Your help is appreciated by all. Thanks.

Mike, It's a 2002 Disco Series II with 76,000 miles. What's the purpose of the cold start?

Sometimes knocking sounds are more evident when the engine is cold. As the engine warms up, metal expands and lessens the knock.
That is a good tip for buying used cars too. If the seller has warmed up the car for you beforehand, he may be hiding something.

Actually, I only hear it when the engine is hot, after runing for about 30 min. or so.

Sorry, I didn't reply, I was up in the mountains playing all yesterday.
As for the cold start, if there is an oil pressure issue, the best way to test it, maybe over kill, is to test the engine when it is cold and when it is at operating temp. both at idle and at 2000 RPM's that way you have a better idea what is going on.

That is characteristic of a slipped liner (Knock on wood)
