Default Looking at 2000 disco II

In the market for a Disco II and im looking at 1999's and 2000's as they are in my price range. I was looking at a few 2004's, but it seems i can find '00's for about half the price with just a little more mileage.

I test drove a 2000 today and spent about an hour driving it and looking it over. Everything on the truck works (windows, locks, seats, ac, radio, sunroofs, etc), no warning lights, and is very very clean considering it has 110,000 miles. New tires were just put on.

Ive always done all maintenance on my vehicles and plan on doing a complete 60k service as described in many posts.

If the headgaskets havent been replaced yet, is it something i should just plan on doing?

Where does the temp needle on disco's usually run? I noticed that the needle stayed right at halfway up the gauge and sometimes just barely hotter. This could be normal range, im just used to my pathfinder running about a 1/4 up gauge.

Will any rover dealership be able to run the vin to let me know repairs and maintenance history?

Mine runs just a smudge about half. I would be surprised if the original head gasket has lasted this long.

I have a 99 D2, it has done me well, service is easy to do and yes, at some point you may have to do the head gaskets, but once done they usually won't be a bother later down the road.

2000 DII SD7 - 102k miles a few niggles but only a whine from the PS pump remains. AC Compressor went south but got a fantastic deal from Will Tillery (Roverguy.com) If you look you can get cheap parts, and as Mike says, they are easy to work on. Go for it...

Thanks for the replies.

Found out today from the seller that the radiator was recently replaced.

I'll run the VIN at the local dealer and see what service has been done at the dealer and go from there.

hi
check all the rubber seals like round the doors, check make make sure the back dorr isnt to stiff, and cheack the sunroof seals and the drain pipes as they can cause leakages which ruin the headlining!! watch out for that!

and cheack the heated seats and windscreen
also when driving at highish speed check for rattles
oh and the rear windows when driving fast as sometimes the seals go and you get a horrid windy noise!!!

hope that helps

We have a 2000 disco II with 103,000 on it I have replaced the alternator and the serpintine and other than that it has been fine. These disco's are the last of the real rovers before ford porked them and added all the electronic BS to please the socker mom's. You can actually work on these with spanners and normal tools, We have coils all around with a 2" spacer lift and a Safety Devices roof rack for our gear. I have driven LR3's and think they are shit compared to these reliable off road machines,

I got a 2000 DII after finding a fairly clean, if neglected, example. It needed HG work and general tune up. However, I've got less than $6K into the rig and I've only got a few details (I'm looking at you, Three Amigos) and I'm good to go.

Overall, I think the Land Rover DIIs are a hidden gem. The "cheap" 4x4s that I looked at (Toyota, Nissan, etc.) were a lot more expensive and/or a lot more beat up. I did like the aftermarket support of the other brands better, but the entry cost offset that. Plus, the aftermarket support for the LR is good enough for what I'm planning on doing with it.

BTW, box stock, I'm amazed at how well the DII does off road. And I've got well worn, street biased tires... doing the CDL and getting better AT or MT tires will help a lot in that regard.
