Default M&S light on, "D" flashing...

I tried to search for this but found nothing. Maybe i did it wrong but anyways here is the deal.

My wife backed out of the driveway today, put it into D and started to drive to work.

The green M and S lights illuminated on the dash and it would only creep along while the engine was revving really high, like the tcase was in low, and the gear indicator on the dash had the "D" flashing.

She pulled over and shut it down. Checking the manual it states that the transmission is experiencing problems and to contact the stealership (of course)

She then started it up again and it ran just fine.

Has anyone experienced this with their 04's before?

ECU for the tranny?

Why is there no dip stick for the auto's in an 04 (WTF!!)

Just wondering if i will have to start whacking people on the side to save up for a new transmission.....

Juuuuust kidding, maybe.

O, and its not an aprils fools day joke. She already got me with that today...

The reason it wouldn't move fast, the tranny went into limp mode.
How old is your battery, when was the last time you checked to see if the cable connection were clean and tight? Go to your local auto parts store, have the battery/alternator load tested, find out what the voltage at the battery is when the engine is off and at idle.
Get back to us.

Battery is bran new, the connections i will look at again but if i remember correctly they were good.

If she went from R to D too fast and it bogged down the alternator/charging system would that cause the fault?

It happens on the DI when i shift too fast, only the red battery light comes on instead.

NO.
Have the system checked any way because it is a main cause for M/S lights flashing.
If it turn out to be OK, then there could be some tranny issue lurking.

Hi.......have you got alot of rain in your area? Go at your transmission, there is a switch box with pop rivets that should be rusty (rivets) humidity can enter into the box and m&s will flash...you must open your box and clean every connectors...that is what i did to a Disco 2 2003 this winter...and PLEASE install brass bolts instead of the metal rivets

I am going to clean the terminals this weekend, it hasnt happened again thankfully.

We are getting a lot of rain, and i will check the transmission for that issue with the rivets, thanks.

It only has 20800 miles on it, almost. The tach isnt doing anything weird either.

Ok, so the terminals are clean. I didnt test the battery, but she starts just fine.

I find that it only happens when shifting abruptly or quickly; P to D to R, you get the point.

Manual states that it will happen if you go from D to n and back to D quickly. Maybe this is the cause.

Is there any way to test the tranny ECU? Is it OBDII compatible or is there a special reader from LR that will cost me my right testicle to get?

What about a sensor?

Really hoping that its not anything stupid expensive, like the tranny its self. it drives and shifts just fine.

I have this same EXACT problem. I have a 2004 with 50K miles. When I turn the engine off and restart the issue goes away. I just had the transmission replaced in December??

Usually this only apprears to happen after starting it if it's been sitting for a while. Today it happened while I was on the highway. I was able to make it to my destination ok but this definately is concerning.

Is this possible a faulty gear position switch as in the bottom of this post: (S) Trans Sport mode light flashing

The fact that it fixes itself after restarting and only happens about 10% of the time is a bit confusing.

Time to replace the "XYZ switch" (gear position switch) on the side of the trans. I had the M & S lights once an a while, then became more frequent.

New battery, good connectors, etc. Still flashing.

New switch from A.B. All done.
