Maf - Land Rovers Only

Found out what the codes were and too lean bank 1 and 2. So I did some searching and it looks like the MAF is bad. My question is should I try cleaning it or should I just buy a new one. Some poeple also said it might be the O2 sensors, but I don't know how to check to see if they are bad.

Not sure how to check an O2 sensor for failure.
It's got to have a way but I'm not sure there is a sensor tester.
I'm not sure you can check an O2 sensor.

There is a way but I can not remember how. Bimmer on an old forum was able to figure it out, but it takes disecting the 02 sensor. On the MAF, Will T has the best prices for new ones. 120 shipped.

You could try cleaning it with electrical cleaner (dry cleaning fluid). I've cleaned mine with no ill effect to the sensor.
Typically a bad MAF will also throw a transmission code too (705?). So lean banks might (big MIGHT) also be bad o2 sensors. I think you would need a diagnostic tool to check them out though, I don't think there is a multi-meter impedance check for them.
If you DIY--start simple and cheap and progress to complex and expensive.

Matt,
Who read your codes and said you were running lean? If the MAF is bad you will run rich. How many miles on your truck, are you still running factory plug wires? What octane gas and what is the truck doing wrong?
By the way, cleaning will not bring a Bosh MAF back to life, just somewhat improve how the engine runs. Lucky for you your trucks MAF is only about $139 if it were needed.
As for running lean, if you are at 100,000 miles, it is safe to say your O2's are waisted, of course the only way to test them is with a good scanner or test book.

Iam just shy of 100,000 miles and the truck is running just fine. I went autozone and had them run the test. I called the local dealer and asked them some questions and they said if it is running fine just leave it because it would cost me 90 to 150 for them just to look at it, but I can't just leave it. The only two codes it was throwing were 0171 and 1074 if I can rembere correctly without them in front of me. Mid grade oct and new plugs older wires not sure if they are factory or not.

P0171 & P0174 (lean banks) can be associated with a bad MAF. The MAF might be sending an incorrect signal to the computer, leaning out the mixture. Also clogged injectors may lean out the mixture too, so maybe a good dose of high quality injector cleaner may be in order. Another possibility is inadequate fuel pressure.
IMO--clean the MAF, clean the fuel injectors, and look for possible vacuum leaks first; then check the fuel pressure, then start looking at the high dollar items (MAF and O2 sensors). Good luck

You can get rebuilt MAF sensors for about half the price of a new one. You can also buy code readers very cheaply. They will also reset error codes for you rather than going to a dealer to have it done.
