Default MAF sensor housing question

I know this question was asked in an earlier thread. I read it a couple weeks ago but can't find it now and the question was never resolved.

Anyway, inside the maf sensor housing, before the sensor wire is a big, thick screen. Seems to me any obstruction inside the intake would restrict air flow. Less air flow means less power.

Question: Does anyone know the purpose of this screen and if it would cause problems/codes if the screen were removed from the housing?

I would say to keep out big nondiscript pieces of jump, but not really for sure. I wouldn't suggest you remove it though, it is not restricting enough air to worry about.

Thanks Mike.
I figured it was probably something like that.
Oh well, it never hurts to ask.
