O.k. :
Now that I switched plates from Michigan to North Carolina, they told me I had to inspaect the vehicle. I took it to Land Rover Cary, and it failed inspection because of OBD "stored diagnostic trouble codes". I foresaw some kind of problem, since my "MIL" light on the dash is burned-out. Here's the brief repair history: 1. Replaced O2 sensors and Cat. "Y" pipe in April 2006. Passed inspection on those two issues. Here's the failed inspection report by Land Rover Cary: 1. MIL Commanded-on. Failed inspection. 2. MIL bulb working. Failed inspection. 3. Stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Code numbers: Description of the "DTC": 1. P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input. 2. P1884 P18XX Manufacturer Controlled Transmission I already made an appointment for Monday next week (yes, they are all that booked), in order to drop it in and run the diagnostics on it in order to get to the bottom of the problem. Only thing I notice that might be "wrong" with the truck is that sometimes when making a quick stop, the engine lowers the rpm's and starts missing for just seconds, then all of a sudden corrects by itself also within seconds. Any opinions or expertise help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Carlos |

actually 102 is the MAF circuit, not the sensor itself.
Its could be beside the loose connector a bad sensor or wiring. although, without looking at freeze frame data I cant pin it down. The neat thing about freeze frame data is it will tell you if the code is currently present, intermitten and if it will turn on the light due to its severity. |

Well, finally got my disco ll back from LR Cary, inspected and all. turns out that the dealer I bought it from, or maybe the previous owner taped the "MIL" out inside the instrument cluster with electrical tape, so you coldn't see when it was lit. I didn't notice this only after aboout 6 mo. from having it bought, and only when I brought it to FRED LAVERY in Michigan. At that time they "diagnosed" that the MIL was not coming on, so they recommended that since the led bulb was not coming on, a new INSTRUMENT CLUSTER was needed, an $800 part, so I immediately declined and forgot about the incident until I moved to North carolina, since in Michigan emmisions inspections are not required. When LR Cary checked everything and opened the cluster, they found out about the "tape" thing and that my "Mass airflow sensor" was out, so they needed to replace it. all and all , a great service and dealership. Will definitely do business with them again.
Couldn't Fred Lavery notice the tape inside the cluster, or just they didn't see the bulb coming on and decided a new replacemant was needed without OPENING the cluster first??? AMAZING Anyways, I'm also due for brakes, but I'm taking it to Roverclubhouse in Durham for that, since Atlantic British has a brake kit sale and am thinking about getting either the EBC or the Ferodo, haven't decided yet .Cheers to LR Cary for HONEST service. I went to see the facilities at roverclubhouse and indeed they seem to know their stuff. I'm dropping the Disco this week for the Atlantic British Ferodo brake kit install. Thanks for pointing me out in their direction as an alternative to the dealer. Thanks, Carlos Quote:

Inspections?
What on earth? We did away with vehicle inspections in 2001. That was soooooo 20th century. But I'd say it wasn't a good thing. In any given day I see at least 3 cars/trucks/trailers with NO BRAKE LIGHTS. NONE whatsoever. So basically it's not as safe and driving behind these idiots is a challenge in rush hour traffic. The cops are supposed to ticket people but to my knowledge it goes mostly uncited. They do use it to pull people over to check for drugs and such though....who knows it might be okay. |

BIRD has it right.
Everyone knew the shops that wouldn't really check everything anyway. First rule was you didn't take it to an oil change place. Second was show up when he was busy. They only charged 5$ for the inspection which I think the shop got 4 of. So basically the mechanic had to stop his 50-65$ an hour job to give you a 5$ sticker that took at least 15 minutes if he did all the checks and filled out the form. In the end that's why we did away with the inspections. That and Okies wouldn't pay 25$ for a proper vehicle inspection. It was a nuisance all around. |
