Hi Guys,
I'm stationed in Bolivia with just 8 months before I seperate from the Marines. I bought my '99 DiscoII when I was home last month and it's hibernating in my parent's driveway. In January I'm going to load up all my stuff in a Uhaul trailer and drive out to CA (from MA). I'm trying to order the universal trailer wiring kit for my father to instal (nice guy huh?). Is my 99 DiscoII 'independant bulb' or 'common bulb' ? Thanks guys! Erik |

http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/9439C.cfm $100 is a lot of money, vs $30 for the universal from Hoppys. Hmmm..... I could save my father the time and effort and just mail him this though. What to do, what to do? ps thanks Mike! |

Well, not being familiar with Hoppys and what they sell, I can't answer your question other then to say that Rovers need these adapter set ups to supply voltage, something that universal kits don't do. You might want to verify exactly what their universal kits do.

Buy the Atlantic British one and then peel off the AB label. What will you see? It IS a Hoppy.
Repeat to yourself a few more times... IT IS A HOPPY. A HOPPY... THE SAME ONES AT WAL MART. HOPPY. They add a Rover plug and put their label over the Hoppy label. Maybe since I called them on that scam months ago they are smart enough to take off the Hoppy label now. That AB thing is the the very kit that was on my G4 that melted and left the trailer without lights 3 hours into a 12 hour overnight road trip. We had to re-wire the trailer to have marker lamps and have another Rover follow behind me since it had no blinkers or brake lamps after the meltdown. Yes, I'm still bitter. Go Genuine...

yall dont jump me for this, but i just bought the 20 dollar hoppy universal kit at wal mart and spliced it in. I have had no problems and i have towed many things! i have been using it for almost a year now with no problems at all! yes the OEM is great because of the "just plug it in" feature, but it is WAY WAY WAY overpriced...just like all other OEM stuff!

The Hoppy can't handle anything larger than a small u-haul because of current draw. Tow a trailer with more than two side marker lights and you're going to hate life. Bad scenario #1: Tail lamp on trailer shorts out- melts Hoppy box. BECM then dead shorts. Thousands of dollars and no warranty help later your truck will work again.
You have a truck that cost $40K or so off the lot- saving a few bucks is generally a good thing, but I'd never risk the electrical system to save a few bucks.

Well, after some long thinking about what to do, I up and called British Atlantic ordereing thiers. 5 minutes later and $107 lighter in the wallet, it should be at my father's house tomorrow.
Had I been home, I would have just rolled down to Advance Auto parts and bought the highest amp rated Hoppy universal but.... Seeing as my father was kind enough to house my Disco, put a couple miles on it every week and wire this up for me, the $100 was a small price to pay to see him put as little hard work forth as possible to get this done. Here's to you dad! ![]() |

Where are you stationed? I live in Santa Cruz, but travel with some frequency to La Paz - we should get together for a beer sometime... Peace,
