PDX Rovers, an independent Land Rover repair shop gave my vehicle an inspection (first time dealing with them), and told me that i have a head gasket oil leak, and a timing chain cover area oil leak.
They also told me that something to do with coolant and an accelerator linkage or something needed a new gasket, but it wasn't a big issue... any idea what he was talking about? the guy i talked to had sub par English, so i came away with a 75% understanding of the things that were wrong. They quoted me just under $2000 for parts and labor to repair the head gasket only. this also replaces plugs and wires, and some other things. Is this a decent deal, and what is required to do it my self? I know a mechanic that does side jobs, and told me if i can get him parts, he will do it for under $1000. I've heard the bolts need to be replaced, the head gasket obviously, and what else? |

I did mine and replaced the water pump, thermostat, gaskets and bolts, I bought all the parts from atlantic british and also sent my heads out to be checked and cleaned and have the valves seated and such, all together I think it cost me around 1000 maybe, and I did the work myself. That also includes consumables like gasket remover and brake cleaner and towels and such, plus other little things I broke along the way.
I also bought new exhaust bolts because I figured I'd brake a few.

Do yourself a favor and degrease the bad areas and power scrub the entire engine. Over the next week or so keep checking and see what is really leaking, you may find it is not as bad as they told you.
As for a Good price, I had mine done 6 months ago, using all Rover parts and it was only $1400. Mike |
