Need Advice!! Buying used 2000 Discovery. what to look for?
Hi Guys,
I currently own a 1997 discovery SD and I will trade it in for a 2000 Discovery 2. the series 2 has 127k miles and it does not have any codes on or lights on the dash. it does seem it is leaking very little oil but will have to get underneath to really look at it. I drovfe it and it drives very well. Compared to the series 1 I have it is so much smoother. I dont do any hardcore off roading so the series 1 really is not for me but the 2000 looks very nice. any thoughts on what I should look for?
if it were me i would keep the older truck , just my opinion though..More robust.

I've got to agree with roverich. Keep the d1. You have a cdl and the d2 does not. It probably has the cdl t case but no linkage to engage it. On the other side if you are mechanical, have $500 and a spare weekend then you can get a cdl shifter and mod it out.
What to watch out for on the d2 are head gaskets, front drive shaft.
If you are not mechanical, take it to a Rover shop and pay to have a pre-purchase inspection done.
How much are they giving you in trade for the D2 and what are they asking for the D2?

Honestly for mall crawling and daily driver duty I would prefer the DII to the DI.
The DII is more prone to headgasket issues, electrical gremlins and drive shaft failures. If you do the maintenance as prescribed keep the cooling system up to snuff and replace/rebuild the drive shaft you should be happy with it though.

I would also, being that it has proven itself good, on and off the road for 11 years for me.

Actually guys I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Though only for d1. The reason I want to change is that no matter what I do to the d1 there is always something wrong with it! I maybe got a bad one but just too many things going on. The disco 2 has only a minor oil leak from the cover gaskets. Now I'm not familiar with the driveshafts so how can I tell if that has been replaced already? I can do most things like water pumps, alternator, suspension bushings, fuel pump, sparks, etc.
