Default Need help. somthing wrong and not sure what

day before yesterday i went through some mud and later on the night my engine began to overheat. i pulled into a gas station and found out my coolant cap had blown off<i found that weird because that usually doesn’t happen> so i put some water in it and used some duct tape for the meantime. it drove perfect all day that night and the next day. to get to a friends land i had to go through some mud again and i didn’t get stuck at all when some friends of mine did get stuck. thank god for the rover but later yesterday it started to overheat again and at around certain speeds it starts to make cluttering noises only when i accelerate i tried seeing if it was something stuck by dropping it in neutral and rolling and it only happens when i accelerate. i had to fill it up with water many times so it would not overheat and continue taping it. now its shutting off after the noises and the oil light is on. for now it looks like i need a new coolant cap and to get an oil change, but im not sure if those are the only problems. what’s going on??

Sounds like to me you blew the motor.

Why would you drive around with only water in it for one thing. And also driving around with the cap negates any amount of water you put in anyway. No pressure in the system creates leaks and it will automatically blow out anyway.

Driving around after overheating once is bad. Driving around on a regular basis with water and no cap.

Well sounds like you ruined the motor. Sorry but when it rattles at acceleration that means its gone. Sorry.

it cant be that though it had coolant in it anyway i just added water because it says on it to add coolant and h2o. i only added water in it when i found out the cap was gone. it never had overheated i just noticed the temp gage going hot so that was when i found out the cap was gone and i didnt drive it for a while. i used tape as a way for the pressure to stay in it and it has worked fine. today i turned it on and the oil light came on i accelerated to see how it sounded and it bearly makes a sound.

The tape will not hold. The heat will expand the glue and allow a gap when it cools down especially.

You need a new cap and proper mix of coolant and distilled water, and pray that you didn't drop a cylinder liner after overheating it.

May then want to clean the radiator and AC condensor real good to get the mud out just to make sure it's not overheating because of that.

The easiest way is to take the top of the fan shroud off, then hose it out from between the radiator and condensor.

You may very well have motor damage after overheating, but you may want to rule a few things out first.

Have you checked the oil level?

After you get the cap you need to see if you are loosing water anywhere else.

Peace,

Dan

i ordered the cap and should recieve it by saturday, for now i will clean out everything you said and buy the coolant. any suggestions on what type of coolant is the best for it. and would it hurt the engine to hose it down to get any extra mud off?

Dexcool coolant.

I may get flamed for this, but I have hosed my entire engine compartment down on plenty of occasions, but you will have to let it dry for a while before driving it (you shouldn't be driving it with an unpressurized cooling system anyway).

You may want to cover the alternator and fuse box before doing it.

Peace.
