99 DII. Had to replace the radiator on my wife's Disco the other day. The diconnects to the trans cooler and the engine oil cooler were impossible to release until I had the radiator out so I just cut the rubber portion of the lines to get it out. Since 4 new lines would have been 400.00 (OUCH!!), I just spliced in new hose from the cut line to the coolers and clamped them. So far so good. Car ran fine for the past 4 days until last night when I looked into the rear-view mirror and discovered I was doing my best James Bond smoke-screen imitation! Immediately pulled over and watched all my trans fluid leaking onto the road. Hope I didn't damage the trans, as I got it stopped very quickly and didn't hear any funny noises. Had it flat-bedded home and discovered this morning that one of the rubber lines I spliced in to the trans cooler was essentially disolved and had burst. The line was standard black reinforced hose of the same dia. from AutoZone. Is trans fluid corrosive to rubber hose? If so, this is a new one on me. What hose could I use to avoid bending over for the Land Rover dealership?
Thanks in advance for all the advice - Bill |

If in your area, you have a company that makes custom hydralick line, remove all your fittings and have them make you lines out of the best material they have. The biggest cause for Disco's to burn to the ground are the cooler lines failing, so don't go cheap. My first choic has alway been custom made line, usually still cheaper then factory replacements and last forever.

actually you screwed up, you dont need to take the lines off the trans cooler to take the radiator out.
but you will be lucky to get the lines off the cooler without breaking the cooler itself.

Thanks for the input. It was my bad. I actually inadvertantly used heater hose (DOH!!!). Pulled off all the lines and am replacing with Earl's stainless braided high pressure line. I think that should do it. Again, thanks for the help.
