I just bought my first Discovery II. I have wanted a DI or II since I was in High School! I live in Charleston, SC and bought it from a guy who was moving from here to Oregon. It is a 1999, blue, and I got it for $2000. It is not without issues though, it has a ticking sound which I am fairly certain is a lifter tap, and the Heater Core has been bypassed (not a huge deal living in Charleston). However the Leather is good and the body and paint is EXCELLENT!! Especially for an 11 year old vehichle. I have heard all of the horror stories about these things, but I am an Engineer in the Auto industry, and am up for the challange, but before I tear into the valves to stop the ticking, I was wondering if anyone had any advise I should hear first??
No advice from me on the valves, but a BIG WELCOME !! That is a great ID ! Rubicons beware....

Congratulations! You got the exact same Discovery as me for $18,000.00 less. As long as you can keep up with the maintenance you made a good purchase. I don't know the milage but for $2k in good condition anything under 130k miles seems like a good deal. Did you get a car-fax report on it? Can you upload some photos?
Advice - Never under estimate the amount of work it will take to keep it running. Know that there are things that will JUST happen without reason or warning. You will tear that motor apart sooner rather than later. The ticking you hear is probably a y-pipe/manifold gasket, even though it sounds like a lifter. Start your maintenance before you start to customize.
You will love every moment of owning a disco. Good luck have fun!

Hi i8aRubicon
New Disco II owner:
I did maybe this same repair yesterday! Mine had a constant ticking on the pass side of engine. It was simply a $10 exhaust to manifold gasket leak, so check it out before you tear into the engine as this is dead common on V-8 Land Rovers. Usually fades a bit once the engine warms up.
All the best with your New Rover, you'll love it.... especially once you hit a few trails and get some camping in.
Cheers, John

I am new here too. As others have suggested it is probably an exhaust leak. I had one with that very issue. Listen in the engine compartment and then under the truck. If its noisier outside of the engine compartment it is most likely an exhaust leak.

Jealous! I'm in the market for a 99 as well as stated in my earlier post. Out of curiosity what was the mileage? I'm looking at one that has 150K on it and I'm certain it ant b worth more than $2K at that mileage.
Thanks for all of the advise and encouragement guys! I will get pics posted ASAP! It seems you guys would like a little more info on my DII. I got it from a couple who had to move to Oregon for work. The moving company told them the Disco was too heavy to trailer that far. They posted an ad on Craigslist on Oct. 18 and had to move by Oct. 20! Luckily I had the cash! I got a good deal, at $2000, but the old girl is not without a few issues. As I mentioned earlier there is a "ticking" sound that sounds like a lifter, and the heat has been bypassed. The heat thing kinda pisses me off because they didnt tell me...The previous owner only had it a few months, they bought it for $1800 at auction and spent another $1500 at the dealer on Plugs, Wires, Oil and Filter change, ignition coil, a battery, and a rear brake job...Since I bought it I have changed the oil to full synthetic (hoping to cure the ticking), I have replaced the wiper blades (what an expirience that was), and I replaced two tires, when I got it, it had a 255/75 on the front right, a 245/75 on the front left, and 265/75's on the back. I replaced the front tires with two used Michelin All terrains 265/75 (craigslist $40). I know those arent the factory size, but that was the cheaper route. A few things on the immediate "to do" list are: Serpantine belt and tensioner, a differential service (because I dont know when it was done last), and find a BIG ASS mudhole to test out the four wheel drive!!
