walked into my local toyota dealer to see what they had used. i need to get rid of my 03 dodge ram quad cab 4x4 because payments are too high and im moving out with the girlfriend. i saw a land rover defender there, (i always wanted one) but it was a salespersons. anyhow, he showed me a black 2000 discover 2 they had for sale. a couple scratches on the outside, he said they would fix, interior was nice and clean (owned by old people so he said). leather, towing package, looked like it was loaded, with the heated seats and dual moon roofs and all. anyhow, hes asking 15000 for it and it has 99k miles. high miles i know, is it worth it. it needs to go through their shop of course, it did sound like some belts were winding also. but this seems like high mileage to me. what is the average life expectancy of them, whats the average MPG, and are they really expensive to fix.....try not to give a biased answer here, just a bunch of facts. thanks guys!!

Hi Bud, Welcome to the forum.
A 2000 w/ 100,000 for 15k seems bit steep. A month ago I picked up a 98 w/ 160k for 6.5k. I think a fair price would be 9-11k. As for mpg, I have the 4.0 and on highway get 20 and in town, abput 16-17. As for durability, it can be hit or miss. Some of these trucks are plagued with issues, some just run forever with only the usual maintanance. As for repairs and parts, the parts are expensive and repairs even more so. I do all my own work, so for me, its just a matter of finding a good price for the parts, which can take some time. Also, just the normal things like brakes, auto part places wont have them on the shelf, so they have to order them in. I hope this helps! Kieran |

well im very mechanically inclinced. i try to never bring my vehicles in to get worked on. im just worried that it has to many miles. i would buy an extended warranty, so the dealership would have to take care of it, but its also the pain of downtime. is 100k a lot for these. i know 100k on one of my tacomas would be just breaking in!!

You will get about the same or less mpg on the Disco, than on your Dodge truck. With 100,000 miles on it, I believe that is too much price. You can find some cheaper with fewer miles, or far fewer miles for the same price. What I would do is take it to a CERTIFIED INDEPENDANT Land rover shop and have it looked at. Since you are a newbie(
) you don't know what to look for. But since you are mechanicaly inclined as am I, I would atleast look at all the fluids, look at all the axles, drive it hard and hit some bumps. Listen for any weird noises, and clunks. Check all the shocks. Examine the Air suspension(you may have future problems with it) Oh if you don't have an independant shop nearby, take it to the stealer(dealer) you may have to pay for it, but I would rather pay a small price now than a big price later! If you are truly interested in a Land Rover, you can find one much cheaper, and maybe with some good upgrades already done. Good Luck!

That is the mileage my Disco2 gets as well.. all this talk about 20MPG is like a wet dream to a 13 year old, it boggles the mind.

Well to be accurate...... I have gotton 21mpg on my D1 before, the wet dream would be that I got that ALL the time!!
This only occours on strait surfaces, and cruising at 65mph. In the city it varies from 13 to 15. Combo is about 17mpg. I do have a 5-speed, this accounts for most of my better milage. The Disco II owners are SOL! Sorry! ![]()
